Today we’d like to introduce you to Sholonda Snell.
Hi Sholonda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi, thank you for this opportunity! This journey for me began over a decade ago. I’ve always been into makeup, brows and just all things beauty, skincare and cosmetics. I remember when I was around 5/6 years old trying on this green lipstick my mom had and it turning red on my lips and just how amazed I was by that. By 4th grade I was into brows, I went through a skincare obsession in middle school, and by high school I was into make-up make-up, like foundation and that kind of stuff. I would say the desire to create my own beauty brand came about when I was in high school. I started doing research on it and eventually went on to do so my sophomore year of college. I initially launched my business on Juneteenth 2017 but later decided to go on a hiatus to revamp/rebrand and that time away gave birth to Tawny Beauty, LLC.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has definitely not been smooth. I originally launched back in 2017 and later decided to take a break and rebrand completely. That was due to several things, mainly because at the time I was a collegiate student-athlete, I worked outside of that and I really just didn’t have the spare time so it became overwhelming. Now, I’m almost three months into the relaunch and that has been an ordeal of its own given how this year has been going with COVID, so yeah, the road does get bumpy.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Right now I’m fully devoted to my self-development and pursuing personal business endeavors. I was working earlier this year but corona ended that abruptly so I’ve really been able to find solace in taking this time to focus on the things that I am truly passionate about and enjoy doing. I launched my personal website Sholonda.com – it’s a blog site, but it mainly serves as an autobiography site and hub for all of my creative interests and ideals, including Tawny Beauty.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’m all for taking risks and I’ve always considered myself to be a risk-taker. There’s a quote, I think it’s by Einstein – “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” I don’t feel like life is meant to be lived in stagnation. You have to venture out and challenge yourself because you never know what you don’t know. I believe that sticking to the status quo day in and day out eventually leads to regret and missed opportunities.
Most of the worthwhile decisions in my life have been “risks,” and I can truly say that I am genuinely happy with the way those leaps of faith have and are turning out. Honestly, just relaunching a business idea that has been a passion of mine for years in the midst of a pandemic is a risk in itself. Some people would be afraid to simply pick themselves up and try again given a perfectly good shot, let alone shooting a second shot in times like today. But those are the kind of risks you have to make sometimes and that was one I was willing to make.
