Conversations with 1quan

Today we’d like to introduce you to 1quan.

Hi 1quan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am an upcoming artist based out of Atlanta. I got my roots in music and fell in love at a young age. I began to cultivate my love for music in high school. I tried out for Band and even had band classes but I knew that instruments weren’t the key to my heart either. I began making music in the 10th grade on Mac desktop in my computer animation class. I always did my work with animation or fulfilling my portfolio but I always found time to sneak in recording on GarageBand. In college I explored more and genuinely found my sound, working to perfect my craft. In 2019 I dropped my first solo album and followed up with my second album in 2022.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was never smooth road for me, growing up in the inner city in a single-parent household. However, I didn’t have it too hard either. I won’t lie and say I missed meals or was homeless but things could have been better. I had some struggles with the grim reaper and death while in my young adulthood going into college. I felt like I sort of lost who I was in college. Me losing family and loved ones really influenced me and pushed me towards music as well. One of the toughest things I’ve had to do to date is to figure out who I am and which path I’m meant to walk. I’m still on this journey and music makes it so easy to continue.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an artist, nonetheless at heart, I’m a creative. I like to have my hands in a lot of things in which we can express our feelings to the world or masses. I’m most proud of my debut album because that was my first body of work on my own. I was going through a lot personally in my life so that made it much more special to release my feelings to everyone. What sets me apart from others is I try to be as transparent and authentic as possible, wearing my heart on my sleeve with the music. I like to make relatable music so that people know others are going through the same. I stick to my story and speak facts about my experiences or the experiences of others that I personally know. I write all of my music so I take what I put into the universe very serious. I try not to put out negative energy while motivating others because I know someone may get inspired. That’s how powerful music is.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I do graphic design on the side from skills I acquired in high school. I’m currently still cultivating and learning skills, but I mostly work out of Adobe photoshop. I’m learning how to be more self-sufficient in this industry so I’m also putting more time into learning the ins and outs of the recording process. (Engineering, mixing, mastering, etc.)
