Conversations with Abigail Blum

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Blum.

Hi Abigail, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Abi Jax began as a quarantine project to keep me busy and to have a place to put my creative energy. My boyfriend taught me how to sew and I began with making headbands for myself. Once I’d had enough of those, I turned to my closet for something new to work on. I got creative with a denim jacket, posted a photo wearing it, and ended up selling it off my back.

I made a few more, sold them, and it just sort of snowballed. I’ve always had a love/ hate relationship with denim because it’s a closet staple & so versatile, but gosh is it bad to make! So taking old denim and giving it new life became my focus.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I always find this question funny because most assume having a small business is fun & rewarding. It’s quite often the opposite! The drive to continue comes from the passion in creating, and for me, also in the community being an artisan breeds.

It’s been an extremely bumpy road, but I’m happy I’m on it. I’ve lost one whole space to a building fire, been told what I make is hideous or not worth my prices, it’s great! But at the end of the day, I’m proud of what I do and so are the ones that matter most to me. That’s all I care about!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I redesign denim jackets! Some are thrifted, some are new, all end up being redesigned by me.

I specialize in the back panels of the jackets. I’ll remove them, replace them, print on them, bedazzle them, whatever speaks to me!

I don’t really know what I’m known for, but I would hope it’s for my drive. I’m not a quitter, and regardless of my setbacks, I push through. I don’t accept failure! Giving something you’re best and not succeeding isn’t failure, but quitting without full effort is, and you won’t catch me doing the latter.

I’m most proud of sticking to my guns. There are always people out there who try to tell you who to be, what to make, how to change, etc. and I haven’t fallen for it. I do what makes me happy and with that has come success.

How do you define success?
Waking up to days you’re excited for. Every day may look different, and some won’t be as great as others, but overall loving the life you have and being eager for what the days will bring is success to me.
