Today we’d like to introduce you to Afra Brown.
Hi Afra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I published my first children’s book, “The New Kid in Mounds” in 2018, but I’ve been writing stories since I was a little girl. I was a shy child, so writing stories was a way for me to express myself when I couldn’t do so with my voice. Writing quickly became a passion of mine as a child. It was then that I discovered I wanted to write children’s books one day. As an adult, I’m very grateful to now have four published books.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was a little hard for me to share my stories with the world at first. My children’s book series, Adventures with Kelly and Layla, discusses many societal issues, racism being one of the main one. It’s always been a little hard for me to talk about my racist experiences in public, so I was a little hesitant about having others read my thoughts. Since publishing these books, I am happy to know that children and their parents love, appreciate, and are being taught by these much-needed stories.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a preschool teacher and the author of four children’s books. The biggest honor for me is for my students to be able to enjoy and grow up with these books. Being a teacher allows me to be inspired by the children daily to continue to write books for them.
My children’s book series, Adventures with Kelly and Layla (ages 4 to 8) has three titles: The New Kid in Mounds (2018), A Day for Hay (2020), and Off to Plains We Go (2022) I am also the author of a standalone children’s book about an endangered species titled, Fujo the Bonobo (2021)
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I have absolutely loved Atlanta and have grown so much here over the years. What I like most is the many open-minded, forward-thinking, creative people I meet here.
The thing I like the least is the traffic.
