Today we’d like to introduce King Lop.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It’s actually pretty crazy how my journey started with music. As a kid, I was always into music & rapping over songs that I like. I remember when I was about ten, my mom bought me a karaoke machine, & I would throw a CD in there & rap over or along with whatever song came on. But I didn’t really start taking music serious until about 2015. I met a friend named Polo & he made music & he would always tell me I had potential. At the time, I thought he was crazy. But a few months later, we started making music together & it turned out better than I thought. Fast forward about a year later me & my cousin Devon wanted to start recording ourselves so I bought an old MacBook w/GarageBand & found an old microphone that went to my Rockband video game. We grabbed a sock & a coat hanger and made a pop filter & our ghetto studio was complete.
From that point forward I was invested. I did some shows & networked but I didn’t really take off how I thought. But after a few years of dropping music & grinding. In January of 2019, I received a call from universal music & they wanted to negotiate a contract. As we spoke for about 10 minutes, my house had terrible service so randomly the call failed. I tried to call back but I needed an extension (which I had no idea of) & they never reached back out to contact me. So that hit me hard I felt like I missed a crazy opportunity of a lifetime. So after that, I felt lost but I knew I had to keep grinding. So I went back to the drawing board & started investing more in my craft. I started a MERCH store. I took trips out to LA and Miami to shoot some videos & reach more people. Then finally, I got another break. I was nominated for XXL MAGAZINE 2021 ARTIST TO WATCH. So I knew some of the moves I was making was paying off. Fast forward to today, I have hundreds of thousands of streams. Made it in xxl magazine, received a call from a major label, locked in some big-name features, all 100% independently. No label, no manager, no team. Just me, my supporters & God.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was definitely far from a smooth ride. So like I mentioned before, I had a few setbacks along the way. From the call dropping with universal music, going broke countless times, & typical daily life struggles & dealing with the whole pandemic & Covid, the obstacle that affected me the most was in 2022. I lost my cousin, my grandma & aunt all within 4 months of each other & that’s something that still affects me today. It’s hard when the people you love are here one day & gone the next. It’s almost unbelievable how fast life can change
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Well, I’m an independent artist/entertainer/songwriter. So I do the typical artist things like shows, interviews, music videos, but I also am trying to get into engineering soo I can do everything myself. I’ve always hated asking for help so I Lille to learn how to do things on my own. But I specialize in versatility. I always tried to make my song’s different than one another. If you listen to my catalog, I don’t have too many songs that sound alike, soo I feel like that’s one thing that sets me apart from others. Also, just me as a person. I feel like there aren’t many people like me. I feel like I don’t fit in like most people, which is a win in my eyes. & that’s one of the things I’m most proud of. Just my ability to stand out from the crowd and be my own self and live my truth and I’m also pretty proud of the fact that I made it in XXL. That’s a pretty big win for me as well
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Even though I did this 100% independently I feel there’s a lot of people who deserve credit in my success. First my supporters and family for just being there for me and understanding the struggle that I was going through and still pushing me to be the best me I could be. I’d also like to thank Stephanie Cadogan with limelight management even though she’s not my official manager she made me more knowledgeable on the music industry, and what it takes to be an artist. I also want to thank magassia (promotions) for getting me in xxl. And lastly, I’d like to thank my haters for motivating me to go harder each and every day. Like someone once told me if you don’t have no haters, you’re not doing something right.
