Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Perryman.
Hi Amber, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I always knew I would be in the beauty industry. From childhood I loved doing hair, playing in make-up, and wearing high heels, I was into all! My mother had her own hair salon my entire childhood until I was in high school. She was a nail tech, but I hated the smell of chemicals, so I gravitated to hair!
The first thing I learned how to do was braid. I braided hair & then I learned how to sew in weave & it was up from there! Lol. I did a lot of kid’s hair and the majority of my peers. When I got to high school, that’s how I made extra money outside of working my other jobs. Let’s just say I was a hustler!
After high school, I went on to college and received my bachelor’s in psychology at Wright State University in Dayton Ohio. I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. Originally I wanted to attend college in Atlanta, Georgia but tuition was too high, so I finished in Ohi0. In 2014 when I graduated, I immediately moved to Atlanta to pursue my dream of hair.
Upon coming to Atlanta, I used to spend some summers here visiting my aunt so Atlanta was not too unfamiliar. To get my foot in the door, I assisted many stylists in salons & a few celebrity stylists. I learned many things from all of those people.
Finally in 2019, I decided to go to Hair school because I no longer wanted to work under anyone. I wanted to have my own business & one day have my own salon. I graduated hair school in March of 2020 but unfortunately, Covid shut the world down right when I graduated & purchased my first salon suite.
During Covid, I decided to work from home. In 2020 of August, I decided to get my LLC for my hair business. For the year of 2021, I continued to work from home to save money up for my next salon suite. Fast forward January 2022, I was able to purchase another salon suite. Here we are today, I am still there growing & flourishing. For the year of 2023, my goal is to be able to purchase a bigger suite space or my own salon building.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Covid definitely pushed me back and made me press pause on a lot of things. Getting back into a salon suite was a challenge because I had to find new clientele and that’s never easy. It is definitely hard work being an entrepreneur, but it is always worth every bit of the struggle.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When I first moved here the first salon I worked in was a natural hair salon. From there my love of naturally healthy hair grew my interest. Weaves and other styles are fun for me to do also, but natural hair is always number one in my book. I also have a website where I sell raw Indian bundles, bonnets, lashes, edge control, wigs & more!
I would say I definitely specialize in natural hair. I have been told on multiple occasions that I have growing hands. every single one of my clients are natural. some clients came to me with relaxed hair and I transitioned them all. Still to this day, a lot of those clients I’ve been doing their hair three years plus and they all say going natural was the best decision I ever made. When they tell me that, I know I fulfill my purpose!
Some of my most proud moments I would say #1 finishing hair school because I literally did not want to go through that process, but it was a must! Lol. Some of my other proud moments I would say being able to work on movie sets and TV shows and photo shoots. I love to be on set and behind the scenes!
Who else deserves credit in your story?
First, I want to thank God of course because I walked out on faith by just up & moving here with nothing but my car and a weeks worth of clothes! I want to thank my aunt and uncle for letting me stay with them until I got my first apartment. I want to thank my best friend Judah for helping me transition and helping me find a bartending job my first week of living in Atlanta!
I also want to thank all of my mentors, other hairstylist and friends that I have gained along the way that have supported me and my business! I wouldn’t be here without my superhuman mother, I get my drive, hustle and motivation from her. Not to mention she is my biggest cheerleader and supporter!
Lastly, I want to thank all of my wonderful loyal clients who make my world go round! Thank you for believing in me and trusting me with making you feel beautiful each and every time you leave my chair. It makes my heart smile knowing that I am fulfilling my dream/ career!
