Conversations with Andre Murray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andre Murray.

Andre, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
During the rough and uncertain days of COVID, when the world felt paused and heavy, I picked up a camera for the first time not knowing that one small decision would change everything for me. Photography started as a quiet escape, a way to find beauty in the middle of chaos. What I didn’t realize then was that capturing moments for others would become one of the greatest gifts in my life.

When I entered college I did not what I wanted to do truly, photography became a hobby but later it became my peace of mind. I fell in love with the imaginaition and creative mindset of what was happening around me every day. The fashion shows that lit up campus, the joy on my friends’ faces as they see their graduation pictures before they walk across the stage, and the small moments in between… all of it fueled me. The support from the people around me helped me build the confidence I needed to keep moving forward. They saw something in me before I fully saw it in myself, and I cannot thank them all for what they did.

My very first paid client was actually one of my close friends in college, someone who has now become one of my best friends in life. That moment made everything feel real. walking aorund with their family, taking pictures of different moments that was sure corny and joyful, It was the beginning of a journey I never expected, one that turned my passion into a purpose.

As I grew into a professional photographer, I realized just how much this craft had to offer. Photography opened doors for me, doors to new people, new cultures, and new places I would have never visited if I hadn’t taken that first step to pick up a camera. What started as a hobby evolved into a business that allowed me to travel, explore, and connect with the world in ways I never imagined.

Today, I still find joy in every person that comes to me for portraits, whether it’s holiday photos, headshots, birthdays, fashion show week, or event special events. Each session is a chance to show the emotional moment for someone, and that never gets old.

I now work with a company that has given me the opportunity to photograph families, weddings, proposals, and even animals on the beautiful grounds of The Ritz-Carlton properties in Georgia and Florida. It’s an experience that continually inspires me and reminds me of how far I’ve come.

My main focus today is capturing luxury weddings, couples, and families portraits, but along the way, I’ve also gained strong experience in corporate and business headshots, as well as corporate events, and big birthday events. No matter the project, I’m committed to getting better every single day, perfecting my craft so the quality of my work keeps growing with me.

What started as a way to cope during difficult times has grown into a lifelong passion, a career, and a journey I’m incredibly grateful for. And I can’t wait to see where the next chapter leads.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Throughout those years, I struggled deeply with imposter syndrome. I constantly compared myself to photographers who seemed “better,” more skilled, more creative not understanding that they experienced different things than me and they may have more experince than me also. I told myself I should be doing more, improving faster, achieving more. Even as people complimented my work, I questioned whether I truly belonged in this creative space. It took time and a lot of self-reflection to realize that growth is personal with longevity, and comparison steals the joy from the truth that lays ahead.

I also struggled with something many don’t see behind the camera: initiating conversations. As someone who isn’t naturally outgoing, approaching people, networking, and “hustling” the way the industry demands wasn’t easy for me. It still isn’t. I’m in a business that rewards extraversion, and yet I’ve had to slowly push myself out of my comfort zone, learning how to connect with people even when it feels uncomfortable. It’s a work in progress, but I’m growing.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in wedding and portrait photography, capturing genuine, heartfelt moments that tell a real story. I’m known for making my clients laugh and giggle during sessions, bringing out natural emotion is my favorite part of the job, and it shows in the images we create together.

One of the things I’m most proud of is being able to help others who are just starting their own photography journey. Sharing advice, answering questions, and encouraging new photographers has been incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I played a small part in helping someone grow is something I truly cherish.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Through every photography job I’ve had, even the moments when clients weren’t completely happy or felt unsure about how they looked or how I took their picture, I’ve learned and grown. Every critique, every misunderstanding, every time someone said a photo didn’t feel right to them, it all humbled me. Those experiences pushed me to become a better photographer, a better listener, and a better artist.

I’m grateful to have a village of people who want to see me succeed. Their support means everything, and I don’t take a single one of them for granted.

Right now, my main mentor is my Bahamian boss, someone who truly sees potential in me. They’re incredible not just because of their talent, but because of the way they understand how to help strengthen my weaknesses and refine my strengths. Having someone like that guiding me has been a blessing, and I’m thankful every day for their belief in me.
