Today we’d like to introduce you to Azeez Idowu.
Hi Azeez, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Azeez Idowu, but most people know me as Uncle Azeez — the towel dancer, the comic mover, the agbada soldier, the guy who makes you laugh even when I’m dancing like your uncle at a wedding.
I was born in Lagos, Nigeria 🇳🇬, originally from Ogun State, and now I’m doing my thing between the U.S. 🇺🇸 and Nigeria. I started as an engineer, studying Metallurgical & Materials Engineering at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in 2012/2014, and later continued with Mechanical Engineering at Eastern Michigan University — but my real passion has always been entertainment.
I’m a dancer, comic entertainer, musician, and actor — a full vibe creator. I’ve been dancing my whole life, but my journey took off around 2017 when my funny dance videos went viral, and from there, I never looked back. Started my career as a comic dancer with agbada back in 2017, to show the world how happy and vibey we are as Nigerians, also to display the rich African culture- music, vibes etc . I’ve had multiple viral moments, even when I was dancing with my other dance partners, Pillah and Holladave, but Drake’s “in my feelings” challenge I did on the plane went insanely viral.
Now I rock towels and funny slippers as a shock value, also to remind people of daily shower, to show the happiness we carry as Africans despite any circumstances we find ourselves. Also we all try to do a few steps in our bathrooms while in towels… so it’s like bringing out people’s inner thoughts.
We did a towel video where I featured Kao and Nelson crossing the road in 2021, and that became my biggest video. Went viral worldwide, which happened to be the beginning of amapiano sound acceptance in the US— according to people .
I mix comedy, rhythm, and creativity to connect with people and remind them that life doesn’t have to be too serious.
I’ve worked with top artists and brands across Nigeria and the U.S. like Google, Fox News, CNN, Belaire, BET, Davido, Tiwa savage, wizkid, Rema, Asake, Quality Control label, Empire, etc, dropped my first single “Olobe” in 2019, and continue to create music and content that spreads happiness worldwide.
You’ll mostly catch me rocking my towel and slippers, spreading good vibes on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube — because I honestly make people happy for a living.
I’m Uncle Azeez — your mood changer, your comic uncle with a purpose.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Financial instability can affect quality of production .
Social media algorithms could affect your work, therefore affecting your bookings, ultimately affecting your bag
TikTok influencers program that’s pays TikTokers peanuts has ruined the direct artiste-influencers promo business. Artistes would rather go pay 100 TikTokers peanuts than to pay the real creatives what they deserve.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make people happy through dance . My dance style is afro, but everyone can relate as I make it entertaining
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Yes I started dancing professionally with Pillah in Michigan, then holladave joined us
