Conversations with Binoy Paul

Today we’d like to introduce you to Binoy Paul.

Hi Binoy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2005, I was admitted to the Visual Arts Department and completed my postgraduate studies in Master of Visual Art in Sculpture and PhD also at Assam University, Silchar. I am currently working as a freelance artist in the region.
During my time as a student, I faced financial obstacles, but with the support of my mother, I was able to overcome them and complete my studies. I firmly believe that where there is a will, there is a way. In 2006, I was awarded the Junior Artist National Scholarship from the Government of India for two years and also I was awarded a Junior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India for the years 2014-2016. I am dedicated and hardworking, and I believe that these qualities have helped me achieve my goals.
As a growing adolescent I have been fortunate to watch my artisan father, a traditional idol maker, earnestly delving with his medium, i.e., clay, straw, bamboo and jute every day. The meticulous layering of various types of clays was part and parcel of the process through which he would attain the desired image and surface of the idol. For instance the first layer clay was applied for gripping the straw structure of the idol, the second layer clay was applied for shaping the limb formation, third layer clay was applied to protect the second layer fine clay from cracking and finally the fourth layer finer clay was applied along with thin cloth to protect the cracks which might be caused by shaking of limbs. Then various layers of earth colours were applied to materialize the final vision about the deity following the adornment of the deity with various plush of falderal and frills. The entire process of making idol involving contemplative and engrossing meticulousness to the ethnicity had inspired me to an extent that I grew with a dream to discover an authentic creative expression in the higher detail of the ethnicity. Thus I invested my entire academic skills in discovering the unique creative expression with ethnic values through indigenous materials like bamboo and cane etc.
As an artist, I believe that the potential for healing and connection through the creation of art is multifaceted. At its core, it involves expressing ideas, emotions, and experiences through creative means. Art has the power to evoke emotions, stimulate the imagination, and create connections between people across cultures and generations. One of the most significant benefits of creating art is its ability to promote healing and connection. Art can serve as a powerful tool for self-expression, allowing individuals to communicate their innermost thoughts and feelings in a safe and non-judgmental space. By doing so, they may gain greater insight into their own experiences and emotions, and find a sense of catharsis or release. Moreover, art can promote connection between individuals and communities. It can be a shared experience that brings people together, fosters empathy and understanding, and encourages communication and collaboration. In this way, art can contribute to a sense of belonging and social cohesion.
Overall, the potential for healing and connection through creating art is significant, and the role of the artist in facilitating this process is an important one. As artists, we have the power to create meaningful and transformative experiences that can positively impact individuals and communities alike.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Expressing my struggle is a challenging task, as it is intertwined with my unwavering dedication and hard work towards my creative endeavors. As a student, I encountered financial obstacles, but with the unwavering support of my mother, I was able to overcome them and successfully complete my studies. I firmly believe that where there is a will, there is a way.
In recognition of my artistic talents, I was honored with the Junior Artist National Scholarship from the Government of India for two years in 2006. Additionally, I was awarded a Junior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India for the years 2014-2016. I have also been the recipient of the Art for Hope 2023 Grant by Hyundai Motor India Foundation for 2022-23, as well as the Khoj Support Grant in 2020 from the Khoj International Artist Association in New Delhi.
My dedication and hard work have been instrumental in helping me achieve my goals, and I am committed to continuing to pursue excellence in my creative pursuits.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
There are inspiring cruxes in the day to day activities constantly happening in our immediate surrounding which are occupied by various endeavours of people. People’s struggling hardship to survive in the materialistic world often envisions me by means of forms. I am inspired by their toil for their needs towards their fundamental necessities that keep their spirit engaged with the whatsoever mundane predicaments they face. My creative pursuit is to explore covert realities of those people and their active space through different materials and try to bring my vision and perception through my visual/plastic medium. The ethnic cults of Indian subcontinent invokes in me the elements of spiritual truth hence to match with the ethnicity of people I chose unconventional materials and through their innovative use I fulfil the process of my creative imagination.
As an artist, I have personally experienced a range of emotions while creating my art. I often find myself feeling surprised by the process of bringing my vision to life. However, I have come to realize that the act of creating art can lead to unexpected and unpredictable results, even for the most seasoned artists.
For instance, an artist may begin with a clear idea of what they want to create, but as they delve deeper into the creative process, they may stumble upon new ideas and possibilities that they had not previously considered. Additionally, the materials an artist works with can behave in unexpected ways, leading to the emergence of new and exciting textures or forms.
Moreover, art has the potential to take on a life of its own, with the artwork imbued with a meaning or symbolism that the artist had not intended or anticipated. This can be a surprising and enlightening experience for the artist, as they gain new insights into their own work and the creative process itself. In conclusion, the process of creating art is a dynamic and ever-evolving journey that can lead to unexpected and exciting outcomes. As artists, we must remain open to the possibilities that arise during the creative process and embrace the surprises that come our way.
