Today we’d like to introduce you to Bree McGee-Pryor.
Hi Bree, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story… well I always knew I wanted to be involved in a career that would allow me to express myself creatively and also assist others with making their visions come to life. As a child, I participated in many extracurricular activities that unfortunately ended when my parents separated. Through those times, I felt lost and wasn’t sure what I really wanted to do with my future. As a senior in High School, I was sure that Accounting was the way to go since math came so easily to me. After taking courses at a community college, I quickly learned that Accounting was a very boring and tedious job that did not fulfill me.
In late 2011, I met my now fiancee, Chon who had a music group called PirateGang which stands for People Inspiring Real Aspirations To Experience Greatness Approaching Newer Generations. The group consisted of all musicians and since writing and performing music wasn’t my strong suit, I remained a fan for years. Eventually, I jumped into a role of promotion and decided to take my own talents more seriously. I began to take and teach dance classes as well as perform in music videos, live performances, fashion shows and festivals as well as gaining experience in modeling. In 2016, we expanded the group into a business, PGEntLLC to include a better variation of creatives such as photographers, videographers, graphic designers and of course dancers. As someone who found joy in organization and structure, I jumped right into assisting my fiancee with administrative duties.
As time went on, I learned from the individuals on my team and started to expand my talents into graphic design, promotion, content creation and basically anything that I felt would help the overall brand and business grow. During this time, I was in college for Education and working as a paraprofessional in various schools. I then grew a love for connecting with educators, community and the youth. Throughout my time as a para, I realized that being a teacher was not my passion and shifted my focus to community engagement. Today, I am a mother of three years old while balancing being a full-time entrepreneur for PGEnt, a full-time educator for first graders and working through my self-development journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of my main struggles was dealing with the conflicts after we converted PG from a hobby to a business. I learned quickly that not everyone took their crafts as seriously as others did and that ended up in them “walking the plank”, as we call it. The road has gotten smoother but I found that when you have big goals and dreams, you have to take chances and sometimes those chances turn into lessons. Some of the lessons I’ve learned on this journey is to separate friendships and personal, always keep paperwork and to trust the energy in the room and my personal instincts. I personally would love to collaborate and connect with every entrepreneur but not every entrepreneur is on the same frequency or even has the same intentions as I do when collaborating. As much as we stand for greatness and freedom, I do run into people who don’t value those things and it is a bit more difficult to get recognition for doing positive things in this day in age.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Whew…where to start? First and foremost I am a ‘Creative Art Captain’, a title that I hold because of the many hats I wear. Under the ‘Creative Art Captain’ umbrella, I include services such as: event planning/assistance, talent management, project management, social media management/marketing, content creation and digital marketing. My speciality however is connecting the right people with the right people and providing opportunities for artists and creatives alike to collaborate, grow and network. I’ve introduced so many creatives to one another who continue to curate and facilitate amazing projects and their success is success for me. Because I take joy in other people’s success, I’m known by many as an unmatched supporter. I’m also known as an educator, community advocate, and a hip hop dance/choreographer, all of which I’m very proud of. I’m also really proud of my ability to be consistently creative no matter which hat I am wearing and for my ability to support others despite my own hardships.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
One of the most important lessons I learned during the pandemic is to do what’s best for me because other people tend to do what’s best for them. If I have even an inkling that something isn’t serving me in a positive way, I retract. Not every opportunity is worth my time and I had to learn to be more selective and intentional about what I exert energy into.
