Conversations with Brenten Sims

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenten Sims.

Brenten, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2015, I began to get the creative itch. I was working in Higher Education, and I knew there was more for me. As I began searching for purpose, I created my first business 20Sumn. It was a networking platform that highlighted the work of millennial entrepreneurs and creatives. In about a year, I had interviewed over 75 people in the southeast region. After hosting numerous events, publishing my first book, and building my business as a digital strategist, I decided to focus in on my own personal brand and take a much-needed wellness journey. While I continue to evolve in my endeavors, my love for storytelling and highlighting dope people has always stayed the same.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Hell no. This road is hard. It has potholes, and sometimes you hydroplane out of control. But you buckle up and keep going. Whether it be insecurity, fear, or jumping over financial hurdles (all of which I’ve struggled through), I do believe everything is worth it and has purpose.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m known for being the content coach, but most of all, I’m known for amplifying the #blackboyjoy message. As a content coach, I specialize in digital strategy and creation. I can help you do anything from the conception of your project to the moment it births. While I have a cool job, I think I’m most proud of my ability to be resilient. Carrying this weight as a creative is hard and sometimes, the goals seem unattainable. But I’m proud. Proud of the connections I’ve made and the moments of impact that I’ve shared. Proud of the intentionality behind my work and even prouder of the people I’ve created for. What sets me apart from other creatives is my ability to see people in their fullness. I love being able to see people for them and then helping them live up to that. Really- that’s my favorite part of the brand. That is the brand! Yes, black boys can do anything.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I used to love being with my Grandparents. My grandmother would take me to church and my grandfather would feed me all the junk food I wanted. As a kid, you need a lot of love. My grandparents did that for me. Whether it was the zoo or taking me fishing, the time was well spent.
