Conversations with Calvin Watt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Calvin Watt.

Hi Calvin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My first career was in corporate America with IBM. I learned so much working at such a prestigious company as an operations manager. During my time there, I noticed more and more that I would always be changing around my office every other week and decorating my friend’s places. One day my friend told me that I should charge people to come and decorate their homes, that I would be good at it. Of course, starting out I didn’t know what my fee should be or even if someone would pay me for it. But as my career pivoted from corporate America to interior design, I soon learned that business is where and what you make of it. So, I decided to make interior design my focus and in doing so, I got better and better and my business grew and grew. It’s wonderful to always take some time to reflect and look back at where you came from.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In business, there are always ups and downs and when you are an entrepreneur you feel them more when they happen. At the beginning, we did not really understand the value of the services we were providing to our clients. Interior design is a luxury industry for residential but a must-have for commercial. We mainly deal in the residential spaces with light commercials, but it did not take us long to get our fees straightened out so that we could stay in business. There is no need in running a business that never makes a profit, that’s called a hobby.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The C’VION Company is primarily a residential interior design firm with clients across the U.S. We offer design services from the ground up, literally. We work with clients to build homes from scratch, remodel homes and design and decorate all our clients’ interiors and sometimes exteriors. We are known for designing with neutral tones and creating spaces for clients that are not only functional but also specific to their needs. What good is a design firm if we are not being a solution to our client’s problem. Solving our clients’ problems and needs are what makes us so successful and keep our client coming back for years. We hope you reading this can be one of our clients one day.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
One of the lessons we learned during covid was the ability to adapt to an ever-changing world. Where are services are more impactful being hands-on in the client’s home, we also expanded our service to online interior design services. When we were all stuck at home, we beamed into our clients spaces to help them change around their spaces and refresh their look even during quarantine.  You can always add something to your business that answers the problems of now.  We are here to be of service.
