Today we’d like to introduce you to Caren Cruz
Hi Caren, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In college, I studied digital animation and took a Sequential Art class with the amazing Professor Shuchita Mishra. I was able to experience my first art vending event through her class and showcase projects through different mediums such as zines, stickers, button pins, and prints. This experience truly ignited my passion for art markets, which I actively participate in today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building my own business has certainly been a challenging journey. There’s so much that goes into it, along with a lot of research. I’ve faced plenty of trial and error when working on new projects, but I’ve managed to learn and adapt from each one. A major challenge for me lately has been not quite meeting my fiscal goals at larger conventions. Sales can be unpredictable when vending, so it’s important to focus on other aspects like connecting with incredible artists and appreciating everyone who stops by my booth. I believe that ups and downs are a part of pursuing my dreams, but it’s key to stay resilient and appreciate the little wins.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’d love to share more about my work! I specialize in digital illustration that can be described as whimsy and character-driven. I’m known for my distinctive style that is characterized by both soft colors and intricate details that bring my pieces to life. I also enjoy highlighting my love for cute things by incorporating it with fan art or original pieces.
Something that I am most proud of is my ability to connect with my audience through my art. I love seeing how my work resonates with people whether it’s through prints, stickers, or other mediums.
I strive to share Filipino culture and all the richness it brings. Through my art, I aim to celebrate traditions, stories, and values that reflect the beauty and diversity of the Filipino experience.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’d love to encourage readers to embrace their own creative journeys. Every artist has a unique voice, and it’s essential to share your perspective with the world. I also hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for Filipino culture and its rich stories, as well as the joy that cute art can bring. Thank you for taking the time to learn about my work!
