Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathy Son
Cathy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I do a multitude of things in the creative field. It honestly started when I was a kid, I was always exploring different forms of art such as drawing, producing music, fashion, and photography. I remember begging my parents for a DSLR camera in high school and when I got it, that’s when I realized how much joy it brought me to be behind the camera and capture things, especially with my family and friends always saying I take really good pictures. I never took it serious until people started asking me to shoot for them. As I got older and developed my sense of fashion, I started modeling for different brands which I didn’t expected because I never thought about modeling. My first ever modeling gig was with the Atlanta Streetwear Market (shoutout to Chris and the team) and ever since then I’ve been pretty active in the streetwear community. I’ve always wanted to have my own clothing brand for a long time but didn’t know how to start. In 2020, I created the brand Dissent+Ascend which is a streetwear clothing brand based on living a rebellious lifestyle and my passion for evolution. My brand revolves around going against the norms and breaking free from the social construct that has limited us as souls and human beings. From there, I’ve just been building and growing. I strive to connect with other genuine creatives through my art and also build longevity with my brand.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Every journey is never going to be a smooth road, there will always be bumps. There were mostly internal struggles for me like fear, the feeling of self-doubt when it came to completing projects or the outcome of things, the feeling of not being good enough, and the fear of rejection. I’m sure most artists struggle with these feelings. Social media has a big impact especially with the struggle of comparison. I had to learn to be more aware of what goes on in my mind when I’m on social media and catch myself when I start comparing. Something that sticks with me is that not everyone will like what you create and that’s okay. At the end of the day, art is a form of expression and it is very brave and vulnerable of an individual to able to share it with the world.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in fashion and photography for the most part. I’m mostly known for my style. I’m most proud of showing myself to the world, I used to hide. I’m also most proud of walking my first fashion show with the Atlanta Streetwear Market. I was nervous and I get overwhelmed from being around a lot of people but I got through it. I would say what sets me apart from others is my authenticity and the way I see the world and people.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For those starting out, I would say take the time to sharpen your craft, don’t rush and it’s okay to fail. The day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit. Take care of your mind and body as much as you can. It will help you on your journey.
