Conversations with Charity Hamidullah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charity Hamidullah

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I think about my journey it has been nothing short of divine. As an artist I began tattooing 20 years ago at the age of 15. Rebellious I was claimed to be but to me- I was just following my heart.

This journey lead me to Atlanta and City of Ink. There I met phenomenal artists of all disciplines. Traveled the world, opened Black Owl Tattoos alongside Roger Parrilla. Left Atlanta. Came back. And, then had an epiphany that instead of making body art. I wanted to adorn the walls of buildings as a muralist and fully live in my truth as an artist.

Since embracing my flow and trusting in my artistry the world has overflowed with the opportunity to create larger impact in my community. I have collaborated with businesses like Microsoft , Target and the Beltline and the City of Atlanta. Connecting with endless communities as I live and create to inspire, empower and uplift my fellow neighbor.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Everyone has a different definition of what smooth is. Was this easy- no. Could it have been worst? Without a doubt. I am grateful for my journey and this walk because the “struggles” were all lessons to make me stronger in my purpose.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
When I think about my practice I see many things. Love, light, color, empowerment, change and so much more. These things have allowed me to set myself apart as I fully lean into them with the power of creation; never giving up and living everyday fully to create.

My practice is centered around the narratives of identity and self-proclamation as I explore various mediums in hopes to find myself through my practice. And, inspiring others to do the same.

From murals to paintings. Installations to now sculpture – my goal is to share more stories and inspire more people.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
When I needed a mentor or community; I lead with an open heart. Finding that everyone was someway somehow my teacher. This trust in alignment had connected me with all the right people and continues to open doors in mysterious ways. Worked well? I would say it’s been a powerful trait of my practice that has truly fed my career.
