Conversations with Chun-Yu (Harold) Wang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chun-Yu (Harold) Wang.

Hi Chun-Yu (Harold), we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The story of my Visual Effects journey all started from my time during my time as an undergraduate back in Taiwan.

I studied Visual Communication as an undergraduate. At that time, I knew nothing about CG and visual effects. I was inspired by the stop-motion movie “Coraline” by Laika. My friends and I decided to make our stop-motion short film as our graduate final project. We enjoyed the process of making our unique stop motion film but lacking the visual effects skill, we encountered lots of difficulty in getting the good result that we were expecting. That brings me to explore the field of visual effects.

After university, I had a chance to pursue my master’s degree in visual effects at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). It was a life-changing decision for me. There are many different fields in visual effects, I found my passion in character fx (CFX) in VFX because I like to bring the CG character look more lively. As a CFX artist, I mainly do CG grooming and simulation for hair and clothing. I like to observe animal fur and human hairstyle and recreate them with computer graphics. Those tiny details are the keys to making a CG character look unique and realistic.

Luckily, I got an opportunity from SPINVFX right after I graduated from SCAD. Now, I work as a CFX artist for movies and TV series. I am glad that I get to work on an exciting upcoming Marvel movie. There are still so many new things to learn every day at work and I delight in improving myself.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was not been so smooth on the road to chasing this dream. It’s the first time I have to live in a place that is literally on the other side of the earth from my home. I haven’t had a chance to visit my family for around four years due to the pandemic.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in creating CG hair and simulation for hair, cloth, and props. I think the thing that makes me set apart from other CFX artists is that I like to solve problems and create my own solutions, sometimes making my own tools to help other people.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
A person that pays attention to small details and likes to take on challenges is one of the most important things to be successful as a CG artist.
