Today we’d like to introduce you to Connie Paul.
Hi Connie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a medical doctor from the Philippines. I decided to come to New Zealand to change my lifestyle. I brought my children to New Zealand a year after I arrived. I worked in the healthcare industry, specifically with elderly people and liking it. I studied a postgraduate diploma course about the elderly then decided to set up a home health service business. I knew that it takes five years to establish the business. It took a lot of hard work and perseverance before I consider it a success. Now I can say that I have achieved the goal that I want and it’s the reason that I wake up every morning.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It wasn’t a smooth road. The challenges along the way were, firstly the source of funding that clients get to pay me privately. New Zealand government provides subsidized care for people in different ages who has some form of medical condition or disability. It was a struggle to sell my services to them when they can get free services. Secondly, introducing myself as a migrant starting a home care business. I hired a business mentor to show me the right way. Thirdly, even if I have learned their culture through my postgrad diploma course, other health professionals are wary about my methods as I mix both nursing and medical care.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My method of handling my homecare business is that I provide the services first to the new client. The reason is that I want to let them know how Connie’s Angels Homecare works. At the end of the day, most clients would say that “I am an angel that knocked on their door!” Then I assign one of my carers to them as I go to the next new client. I am proud of the kind of service we provide as we always leave them smiling and provide a connection that is loving and filled with empathy. What sets me apart from others? I am a medical doctor so I can provide an evidence-based type of not just personal care but home management as well such as ensuring that their houses are not cluttered for their safety and always encourage them to mobilize around their house.
How do you think about luck?
I believe in Astrology. I believe that each person has already a destiny written according to their zodiac sign and their stars. That all we have to do is follow what the stars has planned for us. Every day as we cruise along with work and decisions, we use our intellect and gut feeling. I believe that no matter what decisions we make, the universe will alter the outcome to align it to your destiny.
