Conversations with Courtenay Christian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtenay Christian.

Hi Courtenay, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, my name is Courtenay Christian, and I am the proud owner of Threaded from Heaven in Suwanee, GA. My journey into the world of sewing began in a creative home where art was a central part of life. My father found relaxation in creating stunning art with Plaster of Paris, molding beautiful statues and sculptures, while my mother lovingly passed down the art of sewing and crocheting to me and my siblings. It was in this environment that I began to develop a deep love for creativity and craftsmanship.

What started as simple needle and thread projects evolved into mastering a sewing machine, and my passion for crafting grew. One of my earliest inspirations came from my love for dolls. However, growing up, I often found that the cloth dolls I came across rarely reflected my own identity. This sparked a desire to create dolls that would represent me and others who shared that same longing. This passion led me to create and sell my own cloth dolls, and before long, I expanded my creations to include adorable clothing for children—eventually even designing outfits for our daughters.

As a proud wife of 30 years and mother of two gorgeous daughters (and a stepmom to three more), I made the decision to leave the corporate world and embrace being a stay-at-home mom. During one of my frequent trips to Joann Fabrics, I was excited when I was asked if I’d be interested in teaching sewing classes. Without hesitation, I accepted and spent about three wonderful years teaching at Joann Fabrics in Duluth, GA, before transitioning to Hobby Lobby in Buford, GA, to continue sharing my love for sewing with others.

Then, in January 2018, I took a huge leap of faith and opened Threaded from Heaven, my very own sewing studio. This was a dream come true, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share my knowledge and passion with the community. You can find my studio at 1145 Peachtree Industrial Blvd. Ste B2, Suwanee, GA 30024. Feel free to call us at (678) 765-0791.

With 26 years of sewing experience, I’ve had the joy of teaching adults, teens, and children alike. Each class has been an incredible journey filled with creativity, growth, and inspiration. I’m excited to continue sharing my love for sewing and helping others discover the same joy in creating that has shaped my life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has truly been transformative, filled with its fair share of challenges, but every bump in the road has only strengthened the core of my business. While there were times, I didn’t always feel that way in the moment, looking back, I can confidently say that the obstacles have been worth it.

One of the most significant challenges I faced came during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a difficult time for everyone, and I found myself at a crossroads, faced with the decision to either close my doors or stay open. After much contemplation, I chose to stay open. In 2021, I took a leap of faith and moved to a larger building, which has since allowed me to continue serving my community on a larger scale.

I am incredibly grateful for the amazing team I work with and the students who have joined us on this journey. Their dedication and passion continue to inspire me every day. Throughout it all, I have held onto faith, and I am blessed to see how this venture has not only shaped my life but has touched the lives of so many others.

At Threaded from Heaven, we believe in “being a light in the community, one stitch at a time”.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Threaded from Heaven, we offer a well-rounded learning experience designed for students of all ages. Our sewing and crochet classes begin with the fundamentals, providing a solid foundation. In just a few sessions, students gain valuable insights into their craft, whether it’s sewing or crochet, with the guidance of our certified instructors.

We’re known for providing students with the foundation they need to grow their skills. Each class follows a curriculum specifically designed to set you up for success. To support your learning, students receive a workbook and handouts for each class. Our sewing classes are available starting at age 6, and our crochet classes begin at age 10, extending to adults. We also offer additional classes to help you build confidence in your craft, such as Alterations Class and Understanding Commercial Patterns. For example, in our Tote Bag Class, students create a beautiful, lined tote while learning how to make a French seam.

What I’m most proud of is being able to connect with the community, offering a creative outlet for adults, teens, and kids to try their hand at sewing or crochet. If they enjoy it as much as I do, we have additional classes to help them continue their journey. For instance, we offer Adult Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Classes. One of our favorite intermediate classes is the Garment Class, where adult students bring in a commercial pattern to sew. Together, we explore techniques that enhance both skills and creativity. In our classes, learning is always exciting!

We also offer specialized programs for kids and teens, including Kids Learn to Sew, Teen Sewing Lab, and a Homeschool Program. Our Becoming a Designer Course and Little Stitchers Program are favorites for those looking to dive into design and creativity. Throughout the year, we host events such as Scouts, Adults, Mom/Dad & Me, and Team Building workshops.

At the end of each school year, we celebrate our students’ hard work at our Fashion to Runway Show on May 18, 2025. The finale will feature the students from our Becoming a Designer Course, showcasing their incredible creations.

In June, we kick off our Summer Sewing & Creative Camps. These camps allow campers to choose their own themes, so they can attend whenever and as much as they’d like.

I absolutely love teaching sewing to students of all ages. The spark in their eyes when they “get it” is priceless. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your skills, we offer a beautiful, relaxing atmosphere where you can enjoy learning or growing your craft.

We hope to see you soon!

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The sewing and crochet industry will continue to grow, adapting to meet the needs of the community. Looking ahead, I believe people are beginning to recognize the importance of returning to the fundamental joys of life. As my mother used to say, “getting back to the basics.” In a world that increasingly focuses on work-life balance and mental health, creative pursuits will play a significant role in helping people find fulfillment and joy.

I truly believe you’re never too young or too old to try your hand at something creative. Whether you’re starting a new hobby or refining your skills, creativity offers a valuable outlet for personal growth and well-being.
