Conversations with Courtnie Heller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtnie Heller

Hi Courtnie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey wasn’t straightforward, and I sometimes felt like I was straying away from who I was. Having both parents and an older brother who all served in the military, it became blatantly obvious that I had no interest in following in their footsteps, nor was I qualified.

Instead, I always hoped to pursue a career in the creative field. That idea didn’t become pressing until my senior year of high school – and like every high schooler, I was incredibly confused about my career choices. With a few options that I indulged in my head and the help of my peers, I decided to pursue photography as a career. After getting my degree and working a few years as a staff photographer and a marketing assistant, I had a lightbulb moment: I made a HUGE mistake.

I found myself to be completely unhappy.

No one took me seriously.

I was in a constant state of “..if I could start over…”

I felt like I was falling behind in life; I was nowhere close to reaching my goal. Then, trying to switch careers on top of it all? The task seemed daunting. Turning 30 was only two years away. In the blink of an eye, I went from a high school graduate with so much hope to being a 28-year-old living a life I couldn’t stand. I was incredibly disappointed in myself for wanting to “start over” and switch careers. No one tells you that it’s completely normal to begin a new journey, no matter how old you are. But I wasn’t willing to waste any more time. I was going to pursue what I always wanted to be: a tattoo artist.

I decided to take the first step and hold myself accountable – made a public post on social media that the photographer they knew was trying to transition her life as a tattoo artist, which got very few positive responses. Switching careers wasn’t a walk in the park – money was tight, and finding a studio was going to be tough. But every challenge made me more determined. It was an opportunity to start fresh, be in an environment that I liked, and put my heart into this new change.

Finding a studio is no easy task, but after MONTHS, I finally found one that was everything I hoped for. I found my dream studio, a place filled with talented people who not only welcomed me but also became incredible guides through my journey. I threw myself into learning and practicing, and with each step, I felt my dream getting closer. During my struggles to transition into tattoo artistry, having a solid support system was crucial. Friends, family, and mentors have encouraged me when doubts crept in, reminding me that I was on the right path.

My high school self would be so relieved to know that I finally figured it out and that I’m so much happier. I continue working at the studio I always wanted to be a part of. I got to learn so much and start and continue my career as a tattoo artist. But most importantly, I got to meet the most amazing people. People who have nothing but supported, encouraged, and educated me. Their guidance helped me build my skills and confidence, making a world of difference as I navigate this new chapter. Today, I’m grateful for the path that has led me here and for the people who supported me along the way.

It’s never too late.
Do what you want and be happy.

Thank you to my support system – Alex, my parents, Liz, Sarah, Samantha, JP, and the guidance at JP Alfonso Studios – for your unwavering encouragement and love throughout this journey.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Switching careers was a whirlwind of emotions, filled with moments of self-doubt, anxiety, and the overwhelming financial strains. I worried constantly if I had the talent and resilience to succeed. The search for a safe and encouraging studio was daunting. While searching for a studio – a stream of thoughts would overwhelm me. Was this going to be a safe environment? Was I going to be exploited for labor? Was I going to learn anything? Did I have the courage to face my fears?

Thankfully, I found a studio that took all my fears and diminished them. Now, I had to throw myself in my craft. Continuing to learn, practice, and grow. To my face my fears and know that I have the talent and the drive to be the best tattoo artist that I can be.

Ultimately, this journey of self-discovery has been a testament to pushing me to confront my fears and embrace my new career.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a professional tattoo artist, I’m all about creating beautiful and custom pieces! Specializing in black and gray realism, color work, watercolor and more! I’m very proud of the growth and creativity that I’ve been able to produce in a short time and I can’t wait to see what my future holds. Besides our artistic styles, our studio strives to provide an amazing and luxurious experience.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The tattoo industry has transformed over the decades, and even within the last ten years, the advancement in technology, products, and artist styles has elevated. For me, I had a nurturing environment to learn and grow and I’m hoping more studios create the same environment for other new artists and clients. Today, many tattoo artists are recognized as true professionals who have honed their skills and moved away from the typical negative stereotype. The stigma surrounding tattoo culture is gradually fading, replaced by a growing appreciation for the skill and creativity involved. I’m excited for the future and what it holds for artists like myself.
