Conversations with Curtis Bryant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Curtis Bryant.

Curtis Bryant

Hi Curtis, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a Photographer and Life Coach. Originally from New York, I returned to my 2nd home of Atlanta in November of 2022 after doing some traveling to the West Coast. I’ve been an artist since I was a kid. I still have vivid memories of being at my grandmother’s house in the Bronx with a composition notebook and a box of crayons. She would encourage me to draw everything in sight. I was practicing still life drawing, even before I knew what they were.

Now at 34, my artistic skillset is wide and knows no bounds. I’ve worked in every medium from ceramics to printmaking and what I’m known for photography.

I began taking photos in college for fun. And one day, my mom decided to surprise me with a camera she ordered me from one of her Fingerhut magazines, I just aged myself.

I guess she could tell I enjoyed taking photos and invested in me early on.

Photography has been a saving grace for me. Not only do I learn so much about other people. I learn so much about myself. I like to say I’m more than a photographer; I’m a storyteller.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Getting to where I am right now has not been easy at all. But this, I would need a video interview to tell my whole story, lol. But what I can share is that I’ve dealt with every human experience you could imagine. My journey has known self-doubt, imposter syndrome, heartbreak, and even grief.

After my mom passed in 2019, my whole life changed. I’ve become a new man every day. And sometimes the process goes so fast I don’t recognize myself most days. But I must admit, I love it here 🙂

And I’m happy to be in a place of my journey where I know I deserve every part of it.

I didn’t always know that.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My job as a photographer is to make everyday people see themselves the way God does. Now I’m not God. Nor do I have any desire to be. But what I know for sure is that I am called to be a vessel of beauty. I’m called to help my people (black and brown people) to see themselves in a way the world has told otherwise.

There’s nothing like seeing my subject eyes light up or how their body language changes when they see a picture I’ve taken of them.

Being a photographer has taught me just how many people are walking around feeling invisible. So I’m here to turn the lights on! There’s way too much beauty to be shared.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The three most important characteristics I nurture in myself for success are…
1. My faith in God
2. My faith in myself and my talents
3. My faith in being able to change the world

If God can use an imperfectly flawed man like myself to change the world. No one reading this is exempt from it either.
