Today we’d like to introduce you to Darian Bishop
Darian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
With over 30 years in the hair industry, I’ve had the privilege of turning my passion for creativity and education into a lifelong journey. My career has taken me around the world—working in 14 countries and participating in prestigious events like New York Fashion Week. I began my journey with TONI&GUY, where I served as a stylist, educator, platform artist, school director national education director. This allowed me to grow as both a stylist and teacher, traveling internationally as a Platform Artist and Educator to share knowledge and stay at the forefront of global hair trends.
Now, I’m excited to bring my passion and experience to Zeba Hair Salon, enjoying life behind the chair focusing on what I love most—transforming a client’s cut or color into something they truly love. Whether it’s a timeless bob, seamless highlights, or a bold new style, I find joy in creating looks that inspire confidence and help clients see their beauty in a whole new way.
Beyond my work behind the chair, I remain deeply committed to education and shaping the future of our industry. I lead Zeba Salon’s apprenticeship program and provide education to our incoming stylists, helping develop the next generation of hair professionals. Sharing my knowledge and watching new talent grow is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my career.
Some of the most rewarding moments come from being part of my clients’ most important life experiences—whether it’s creating the perfect look for a wedding day, preparing for a career milestone, or helping someone rediscover their confidence through a transformative cut, color or extensions. I believe that when you look good, you feel good—and I’m honored to be part of that journey for every person who sits in my chair.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing worthwhile ever comes easy—it takes hard work, dedication, and the ability to adapt to change. Throughout my career, I’ve had to navigate plenty of challenges, especially during my time with TONI&GUY. The company was constantly evolving, with changes and restructuring that brought both opportunities and setbacks.
One of the biggest turning points came in 2022, when my 27-year career with TONI&GUY came to an abrupt end. It forced me to take a step back and really reflect on what mattered most to me—not just in my career, but in life. The answer became clear: I wanted less stress, more time with my family, and the joy that comes from making people happy behind the chair.
That realization led me to this new chapter at Zeba Salon, where I’ve found balance and rediscovered my love for creating beautiful hair, while also being more present for the people I love.
The road hasn’t always been smooth, but every challenge has led me to where I am today—and for that, I’m grateful.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I began my career specializing in cutting, and that foundation led me to travel the world, cutting on stage as an educator and platform artist. I always had a natural talent, for avant-garde hairstyling, creating intricate, show-stopping finale pieces for stage presentations and editorial work. That knowledge gave me the opportunity to collaborate with some of the most talented professionals in the industry—something I’m incredibly grateful for.
One of the highlights of my career was being a five-time finalist at the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA), winning the Avant Garde category in 2009. That recognition was a proud moment, but more importantly, it represented the creativity and craftsmanship I’ve worked so hard to develop over the years.
What sets me apart is my deep understanding of hair. I don’t fear any length, texture, or style. Whether it’s a precision cut, a complete transformation, or working with alternative methods like wigs, hairpieces, or extensions, I approach every head of hair with confidence and creativity. My time working with avant-garde styling and hairpieces made me incredibly comfortable with extensions and non-traditional techniques—allowing me to help clients achieve results they may have thought were impossible.
While I still love creating classic, lived-in color and precision cuts, I’m equally passionate about bold, vivid colors and modern trends. Ultimately, I thrive on transformation—helping someone see themselves in a whole new light is what inspires me every day.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is finding balance—between my career, my personal life, and my well-being. After 30 years in this industry, I’ve come to realize that while success and creativity are incredibly fulfilling, it’s the people in my life and the moments of peace that truly bring joy. Spending time with my family and making sure I’m present for them has become a priority, especially after some of the challenges I’ve faced in recent years.
In my work, what matters most is the impact I have on others. I take great pride in helping people feel good about themselves through their hair. I truly believe that when you look good, you feel good, and I find fulfillment in being part of that transformation. I’m also passionate about continuing to educate and mentor others, passing on the knowledge I’ve gained over the years to the next generation of stylists.
Ultimately, what matters to me is living a life that feels meaningful—both professionally and personally—by creating beauty, fostering relationships, and nurturing the things I hold most dear.
