Conversations with Dedrick Murphy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dedrick Murphy.

Hi Dedrick, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a fan of photography and how it can bring joy and happiness to people; I also love how it captures time and make it into memories. I started in 9th grade where I got the idea of becoming a photographer I didn’t have any experience by far. I didn’t know what to do with a camera or how it worked I simply just picked it up and started to snap pictures. Of course, I didn’t know the difference between the ISO, shutter speed or Aperture. I remember my first camera was a Canon Powershot SX430 IS it was a good beginner’s camera it was the best thing that my parents invested in for me I started to take pictures of everything and I had a blast with doing it and thats when I knew that I found my love for photography. After a couple of years later going into my Junior year I signed up for AP photography class where I met my mentor, Mr. Foster who further inspired me. He taught me the ways of how a camera worked, ISO, shutter speed, aperture and more. With his teaching, I started to take it more seriously and invested into a better camera; the Canon EOS-1D Mark III, and oh my god it was like a computer. I had hard time figuring it out, but with the of power of youtube I did. My photography career started in January of 2022. I started going to my High school basketball games (Newton High School) and thats where I begin to expand my name and my business started to expanded. I started doing more school events and promoting myself, and that’s how I got to where I am today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Photography is one of the most if not the most expensive hobby. The camera itself could cost as much as a car. Lenses are sold separately and are also pretty pricey as well. But when you invest, your quality increases, which brings more clients wanting to book. So, I would say photography is more of a rollercoaster than a road.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I would say I’m a all-around kind of photographer. I do it all, from landscape to studio to sports! I’ve possibly done everything on the book, but I’m widely known for both my studio work and my modeling clientele. I’m most proud of my support system from both my friends and family and my model, Alani, of course. I can’t explain how I differ from other photographers, because we all have different eyes when it comes to taking a picture.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was very quiet and innocent. I always kept to myself which made my imagination run wild and I guess that’s how I create the kind of art I put out now. I was also into music I joined the band my 5th grade year and have been playing since. Band made me grow out of my shell and bettered my discipline. And shaped me as the young man I am today.
