Today we’d like to introduce you to Delaney Grimm.
Hi Delaney, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been into crafting and creating from the time I was little. I say I have a “too-much” gene and have to go all-in with whatever project currently piques my interest. Little did I know, it wasn’t until I found my love for flowers that I finally settled on one craft to master. Flowers bring such natural beauty that I was inspired to share them with everyone and help preserve once-in-a-lifetime moments.
In 2020, both my husband and I lost our jobs at the university and moved in with my parents. I found it incredibly relaxing to walk outside and pick flowers, but I hated feeling like I was picking them just to wilt within a few days. I tried putting a few in a book, bought a frame, and added a quote. That was my first ever frame, and I still have it hanging in my room. From there, I sold to my friend, Paige, and word of mouth started taking off. I sold on Facebook for a while until markets began opening back up in May.
Markets were a hit, and I loved being able to interact with customers and tell behind-the-scenes stories of each frame. Eventually, I expanded my offerings into custom orders and bouquet pressing, greeting cards, art prints, and flower presses.
I continue to find fulfillment in working on flower frames and try to have a go-with-the-flow approach to it. As long as others are still enjoying the art I make, I will continue making it!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting my own business has had its ups and downs, as expected. I fully funded the start-up of my business by myself so getting the starting materials (tables, tents, frames, market fees, frames, flower presses, etc.) was costly. I still remember dragging out my kitchen table to my first market because I couldn’t afford fold-out tables yet!
For a while, I ran my business out of a 1 bedroom apartment while also working full-time as a caregiver. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Georgia Southern, so I have no background in business. It’s definitely been a learning curve to wear so many different hats and create a website, run marketing, track finances, be customer support, and create frames.
However, I’d have to say there have been way more ups than downs. I’ve met so many fantastic people and have had so many opportunities come up that I wouldn’t have had if not for my business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a floral preservation artist specializing in creating unique and one-of-a-kind pressed flower frames. I offer a variety of premade frame layouts from my meadow layout to my center spray, moon frames, herbariums, and forever bouquets. I also offer wedding bouquet pressing and memorial pressing.
I am most proud of the custom orders I get to collaborate with customers on. I love hearing unique ideas for frames and being able to make their vision come to life.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think floral pressing is on the rise right now! It is the most popular option right now for wedding floral preservation, and for great reasons! Floating frames seem to be the preferred look right now however I’m curious if matted frames will be making a comeback.
I definitely see the art form continuing to grow and I look forward to seeing new artists experiment with flowers as a medium!
