Conversations with Denzel Phillips

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denzel Phillips.

Hi Denzel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Music has always been part of my lineage. It was passed down from my grandmother to my mother, and from the very beginning, my mom sang to me constantly—she jokes that it was the only way she could get me to stop crying. Growing up, my parents’ musical tastes shaped me in powerful ways. My father was a huge Michael Jackson fan, while my mother lived and breathed Whitney Houston, so I was surrounded by excellence from day one.

On top of that, my mom introduced me to the greats of R&B—artists like Aaliyah, Silk, H-Town, Tank, Jodeci—those voices deeply rooted me in the soul and emotion of the genre. While music was always around me, I didn’t truly begin singing until we started attending church regularly. That’s where I discovered my sound, my confidence, and my presence as a performer.

I did my first talent show in the fourth grade, but my true lightbulb moment came when I starred in Georgia on My Mind, portraying Little Richard and James Brown. That experience made everything click. In that moment, I knew—without a doubt—this is what I was meant to do.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the greatest challenges artists face—often the most underestimated—is funding, closely followed by the constant pursuit of balance between life and the work. Early on, I believed that having the gift alone would open doors, the way it does in the movies. You’re talented, you’re discovered, and everything falls into place. But real life doesn’t work that way—and honestly, I’m grateful it doesn’t.

What people don’t always see is the grind behind the scenes: investing in your own art, sacrificing comfort, managing time, and showing up every day even when the return isn’t immediate. There were moments when it was hard—moments where quitting would’ve been easier—but those same moments forced me to grow, to sharpen my discipline, and to truly understand my purpose as an artist.

Through the struggle, I found my rhythm. I learned how to build, how to pace myself, and how to respect both the craft and the process. Every obstacle became a lesson, every delay became preparation. I’m no longer waiting for the moment—I’m creating it. I’m moving with intention, clarity, and confidence, and I know without a doubt that I’m on my way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an R&B recording artist originally from Athens, Georgia, and I’ve been rooted in Atlanta for nearly sixteen years now. I made the move with one purpose—to fully pursue my place in the entertainment industry and give my dreams a real shot. Atlanta didn’t just shape my career; it shaped me. It taught me resilience, patience, and how to stand firm when the road gets uncomfortable.

I don’t see myself as just a singer. I’m an entertainer. I believe in creating an experience—something you can feel, something that lingers long after the music stops. Whether I’m on stage serenading or commanding the room, my goal is always connection. I want people to feel seen, heard, and moved.

What I’m most proud of, though, is that I never gave up on myself. There were moments when I was overlooked, underestimated, or knocked down harder than I expected. But no matter how many setbacks I faced, my love for music never left me. That love is what kept pulling me back, reminding me why I started in the first place.

What truly separates me from others is my willingness to grow. I’ve learned how to listen, how to be corrected, and how to evolve without losing who I am. I’m no longer afraid of the work it takes or of betting on myself. I understand my gift now—and more importantly, I understand how to use it. I’m walking in confidence, clarity, and purpose, and I know I’m exactly where I’m supposed to

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I genuinely enjoy cooking and grilling—it’s one of the ways I express care and creativity outside of music. I love hosting my people and creating an atmosphere where everyone can relax, be present, and feel safe enough to just enjoy the moment. That’s really where the joy is for me—bringing people together and letting the outside world fade away, even if it’s just for a few hours.

I definitely plan to tap into that passion more seriously down the line, whether that’s through a cookbook or a YouTube cooking channel. But for now, I’m enjoying the process—experimenting in the kitchen, sharing my recipes, and jokingly fattening up my circle one good meal at a time.
