Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree’ Nixon.
Hi Desiree’, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As cliche as it may sound, I have always been intrigued by fashion from a very young age. Growing up, I was known as the go to person to ask for outfit advice amongst my family and friends. One of my favorite pastimes was watching shows like Kimora: Life In The Fab Lane, What Not to Wear and How Do I Look (amongst many others) with my mom. Watching these kinds of shows was one of many inspirations that caused me to desire a career and life like the ones I saw on screen. I would draw designs as a child and when asked, I would say I wanted to be a fashion designer when I grew up.
Fast forward to high school, I began to learn more about other career paths in the fashion industry. When I came across the role of a stylist it made my heart sing. I soon realized I didn’t want to be the person making the clothes, instead I loved taking beautiful pieces and fitting them together. To me, It’s almost like the pleasure of figuring out a puzzle.
It was a no-brainer to choose my field, fashion merchandising, when I started school at Georgia Southern University. Because I love to be involved in extra curriculars, I joined a fashion organization on my campus. Before I knew it I had become fashion committee coordinator and later vice president. I had the opportunity to work with male and female models of various shapes and sizes, leading both the styling team and other club members in bringing runway shows and photoshoots to life.
I’ve since worked with brides, event attendees, clients traveling around the world, editorial brand shoots and so much more!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my biggest struggles has been managing work life balance. I realized quickly that it can be difficult being your own boss and creating your own schedule. Sometimes I get a bit overwhelmed with deciding what to prioritize, which is hard when everything feels like a priority. I’ve had to do lots of adjusting and readjusting, to find what works for me at that the given moment. What worked for me once may not work now and what didn’t work before, may do better the second time around. It’s all about trial, error and flexibility. I have to remember to give myself grace, I’m still learning and improving as each day passes.
Fortunately I have been blessed to have a fairly smooth journey thus far. Of course entrepreneurship comes with its challenges but challenges make life more interesting! In my opinion they make you a better business owner as well. And because I have the support of the people I love, the challenges are all the more bearable.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’d love to tell you more! I’m a personal stylist specializing in travel styling. I have the pleasure of supporting my clients from deciding what to wear for each excursion during their trip, to packing a bag for them to travel with.
My approach to styling is unique because I care about more than just pretty clothes. I dress my clients in clothing that is a true representation of themselves, not in a trendy costume.
As women, we have been taught to dilute our confidence as a means to fit in. My main aim is to help women feel confident, in being confident. That starts with showing up in a way that feels right to you, wherever that may be in the world. I’m very proud of the connections that I make with my clients. Having open dialogue and transparency is extremely important to me and is one of the core values of my business.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
There are so many people who have made a substantial impact on me as an entrepreneur and as a person. They have helped shape who I am and how I run my business.
My dad always encouraged me to do something that I’m passionate about as a career, something that would bring me joy. So having the knowledge that fashion was that thing for me, he was always both hands in supporting me along the way. Even in times when he didn’t understand or when it may have been scary for a parent of a creative, taking a non conventional route, he had my back. I’m forever appreciative of that.
I have to credit my mom for planting my fashion roots in me. My mother had great style and I know she also enjoyed fashion. I remember going to a fashion show at the mall, way back when. There was a competition for mothers and daughters with matching outfits and we won a prize (I don’t remember what place we came in). The love of fashion is something that we will share forever and I will always aspire to be more like her.
My boyfriend Cameron has supported me since college (over 5 years ago now)! He has created graphics for me; he’s helped me edit and reedit my website; he has and continues to take all of my branding photos and ultimately is just the first person I call on when I’m overwhelmed. I appreciate that he is always willing to lend me a hand. He’s been there since the day I officially started this business and has been by my side every step of the way.
My close friends and family have encouraged me in more ways than one over the years. Some have hired me and others celebrated me even when I didn’t feel that I deserved it. They have said they are inspired by me starting a business, and that they are proud of me for it. My inner circle are some of my biggest cheerleaders and they have had a bigger impact on me than they may know!
