Today we’d like to introduce you to Ela Cell.
Hi Ela, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I was a little girl, I was pulled under by the sea—it took a few minutes of my life, and it left a deep mark on me. From that day on, the vastness of the ocean filled me with both awe and fear.
Years later, after my mother passed away, I decided to face my greatest fear: the sea. It all began with a diving course and a trip to Hawaii, where I met wonderful people who introduced me to the enchanting world of mermaids.
When I returned to Los Cabos, I immersed myself once again in the ocean. By then, I was a certified Dive Master, and soon after, I completed a freediving course and began surfing. I connected with the sea in a way I could never have imagined — especially for someone who once feared even stepping into it.
That’s how The Cabo Mermaids was born — from the meeting point between fear and passion. It began as a personal project, taking photos and videos in a place where mermaids didn’t exist. Over time, it evolved into a way of sharing my love & respect for the ocean with others, creating unique images and videos that invite people to discover the magic of seeing themselves as part of the sea — through the eyes of a mermaid.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would love to say it has been an easy road, especially when it comes to sharing the experience with others — because it’s something I’m truly passionate about. The only real challenge I’ve faced has been reaching a wider audience, especially compared to larger activity companies.
However, that’s not something that worries me. The Cabo Mermaids has always been about creating a deeply personal experience — one that makes each person feel safe, unique, and happy in a magical and beautiful place like Los Cabos
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work is deeply connected to the sea — both as an artist and as a storyteller. Through The Cabo Mermaids, I specialize in creating unique photo and video experiences where people can become mermaids for a day, connecting with the ocean in a magical and empowering way.
What makes this work truly special is its origin. As a child, I was pulled under by the sea, and for many years, I feared it. After my mother passed away, I decided to face that fear — and that journey changed my life. I became a Dive Master, learned freediving, and began surfing. The ocean, once my greatest fear, became my greatest teacher.
The Cabo Mermaids was born from that transformation. Today, I’m proud to offer an experience that goes beyond photography — it’s about connection, healing, and wonder. I capture people in a moment where they see themselves as part of the sea — graceful, powerful, and free.
What sets me apart is that this isn’t just about creating beautiful images — it’s about sharing a piece of the ocean’s soul and inviting others to discover their own.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is patience, humility, and respect, and all of these values come from my connection with the ocean. Patience is essential because the sea teaches us that there are things greater than ourselves, and we must wait for the right moment, whether it’s for the tides to be favorable or for the perfect wave while surfing.
Humility comes from recognizing that we are not in competition with others, but rather on a journey of personal growth. The ocean constantly reminds me of my own smallness and the importance of staying grounded.
And respect is something the ocean teaches us as well, showing that every creature, no matter its size or form, has a special place in the world. Together, these three values lead us to a place of peace and harmony.
