Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Michaud.
Hi Elizabeth, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have been writing since I was a kid. I always dreamed I would be a writer. As I got older, I wrote short stories. I always loved the end result of my short stories, but I found that the writing process was antiethical to who I am as a person, which is super lazy and impatient (go figure). I stumbled upon poetry as a way of sharing my stories without having to commit to the long process of writing short stories, novellas or even a book. The genius of telling stories through poetry is that the stories are short and succinct, and because of their brief nature, they can pack a greater emotional punch or tell a more resounding narrative that could otherwise be convoluted and be less impactful. As I found my voice, I discovered that I love using poetry to tell stories that are mostly grounded in black history or in love, but themes like grief, loss, and even horror find a home among my writing.
Two years ago, I decided to take a chance and publish my work–and I am so glad that I did! As I enter this new chapter of my life, being a published, award-winning author has breathed new wonder and excitement into the routine of my days. I meet people, talk about the stories and events that inspire my work, and continue to enjoy new levels of creativity as I continue to write more and more. I currently have two books out: Five Dreams and The Bones in the Garden, and I am currently working on a third poetry collection.
None of this is to say I have completely kicked writing short stories to the wayside…far from it. I may have a little something-something up my sleeve when it comes to my short stories….
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think the largest obstacle I face is just getting my name and my work out there. It is really the greatest challenge to being an indie author: knowing that you have a quality product but not being able to reach people can be difficult. However, I feel strongly that I just have to put in the work and that eventually (hopefully!) good things will happen.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As previously stated, I’m a writer and a poet. My passion is using poetry to write about the common theme of love, but also as a vehicle to talk about black history. Our history is broad and rich–if dark and tragic–and I feel compelled to share the nature of our history with others through verse and rhyme.
Additionally, I am super happy about a new book that I will be releasing later in the spring: I am returning to short stories! The genre of course is horror, and I couldn’t be more excited. As previously stated, I wrote short stories before I started writing poetry, and this is an old collection of tales that I want to share with a new audience. It’s exhilarating revisiting this work and I cannot wait for it to be published. The thrill that one derives from getting a new book ready to hit the market is second to none, and I’m over the moon that this collection is getting the love it deserves—and that makes me happy beyond measure.
What makes you happy?
Happiness is spending time with my family, especially my children, chocolate and peanut butter. I’ll also take a good book and a good TV show to binge as well on a lazy weekend afternoon.
