Today we’d like to introduce you to Ishii King.
Hi Ishii, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi! My name is Ishii, and I’m a model/artist. My one character flaw is that under no circumstances can my curiosity go unsatisfied. So, when I stumbled upon the opportunity to model for a company’s launch, I obviously had to say yes. That’s how I ended up spending the day in a wig, on the floor and leaning precariously on another model’s neck. The moment I got completely hooked was when I looked at the monitors and caught a glimpse of the images we shot. I saw emotion, connection and most importantly, an entire story perfectly captured in time. Seeing the result of the work I just put in gave me a sense of accomplishment I had not felt in a long time and certainly had never felt at my desk job. The next day, I decided to pursue a career change from corporate robot to ultimate storyteller.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
In my first few weeks, I often struggled to keep up with the lingo and norms of the industry. I started with quite literally zero connections and cold networked everywhere I went. I was cut or disregarded for fashion shows because I didn’t meet the height requirements. But while these things may have been uncomfortable, I am eternally grateful that they were part of my journey. Through these challenges, I discovered my niche, met incredibly talented people from around the country, and proved to myself that I really can make anything possible.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to consider myself a storyteller, regardless of the method I tell my story. Whether this be through modeling, acting, musical expression or the occasional stand-up comedy I perform for my cat, there is always a story to tell. This is what sets me apart from others. When I’m being photographed for a campaign, I’m also acting and telling a story. When I’m putting on a musical performance, I want my audience to hear beyond pretty notes and catchy melodies. At the end of the day, I am an artist, and the story is my art.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
It’s safe to say that most industries in this country are shifting towards diversity and inclusivity. In speaking with brands I’ve worked with, I hear over and over again that everyone wants diversity, of every category, in their campaigns. This new industry mindset is opening doors for non-traditional models, actors and artists every single day. So, I’m excited to see where I can branch out to successfully in the entertainment industry.
