Conversations with Jafari “Farro Jarro” Jeter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jafari “Farro Jarro” Jeter.

Hi Jafari “Farro Jarro”, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
At nine, my first instrument was a beautiful fire-red orange guitar that I never learned how to play. So naturally, my dad was hesitant to make the investment when I asked for a saxophone a few years later. He got it for me though, so I spent the next six years playing in the jazz band through middle and high school. At the same time, Hip hop was evolving in the 90’s and I was completely obsessed with the beats and rhymes, but more so the beats. It wasn’t just the chopped samples and gritty drum patterns that intrigued me, it was in love with the freedom of creativity and self-expression in the beats. It was much different from the formal jazz training I received from my instructors, but I knew my jazz influence would help me create a dope sound!

Fast forward to the early 2000’s, two of my close friends invested into a beat machine [MPC 2000 XL] for me. We formed our group 3 Headed Monster (3HM) with me as the producer and started networking in the music industry to learn the business side. We learned so much about the music business over the next few years and had some great memories, but life took us different directions. I continued to be a student of music and took up piano lessons then earned my certification as a Pro Tools audio engineer.

I’ve now been working in the music industry as a producer/engineer for over 15 years. I’ve had a lot of great memories and met amazing people, but there were definitely tough times I had to push through. There are three things I practice daily that helped me get to where I am at, and also believe they will also take me to the next level in my career!

(1) Keep an unwavering belief in my gifts and protect my dreams
(2)make sure any project that I work on I give my 100% and treat it as if it were my own
(3) always show respect and maintain good relationships with people

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, there have been many challenges through my journey. I actually quit making music for three years because I felt my career wasn’t going anywhere, and I was underappreciated as a producer/engineer. After several years of late nights in the studio, having to chase money that was owed to me, and working a full-time job at the same time, I reached my breaking point. Also as an entrepreneur, you deal with the daily struggle of having to dig internally to stay motivated and structured, often times when things are not going the way you envisioned, it can take tremendous energy to stay positive and move forward with your vision. That’s where the unwavering belief part comes in.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a multi-genre record producer/engineer. I specialize in producing records from start to finish, vocal editing, as well as mixing and mastering.

I’m most proud of being able to transition my producer/engineer talents into a sustainable career and business.

I’ve had the pleasure of being able to work with platinum-selling artists like Ying Yang Twins, Nappy Roots, and Luh Kel, as well as work with TV networks like NBC, BET, and HBO.

It’s usually my bouncy drum rhythms and aggressive bass lines that attract artists to my production style. I also pride myself on being easy to work with, open to new ideas, and patient during the creative process. So collaborating with other artists is always fun yet productive.

The thing that sets me apart from other producers is my musical versatility. I can step into almost any musical genre and produce a dope record! This gift has allowed me to work with so many talented artists from all different parts of the world!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is hearing the crowd go crazy at my 2nd grade talent show when I did the moonwalk across the stage during my dance routine!
