Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamiah Carter.
Hi Jamiah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
So my passion for crafting begin when I had my first daughter. As a young single mom (at the time) I just wanted to be very present in my daughter’s life and I was very appreciative of the people who helped me with her (my village). My mom always told me to take care of the people who take care of you, and in this case, it was my daughter’s teachers who played an important role in my daughter’s life aside from my family and I. So with that being said, I always went above and beyond with gifting her teachers. That led to me wanting to personally be the one to create them. So I begin to study hours to make things. I would watch YouTube for hours and just researching so much about crafting. I got my first machine, the silhouette cameo, in 2017. I started making decals, hats, and T-shirts. Since then, I’ve become obsessed with all things pertaining to crafting and I love how much I have learned and how much I’m still learning about crafting. I also ventured into parting planning and decorating parties/ and party favors. Crafting pretty much is my passion and my therapy.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh man, of course it has not been a smooth ride. I think for me, I’ve always been in my own head too much. And oftentimes, if I’m honestly speaking, I would be intimidated of failure that I would stop myself from pursuing this as a business. I know crafting and I can confidently say that I knot hour to do so much and I’m really good at what I do. I’ma fast learner and I study so much about this business like there is no tomorrow. However, putting my myself out there scares me. Another obstacle or challenge I’ve had has been time. I was a single mom to my oldest child, I worked full-time s as a teacher, I am a student at Georgia State University, and my daughter is a part of many different things outside of school. So having time to just pour into my business was limited. Now, I’m married, and although I’m still a teacher, still in school, and we now have two girls, my husband is a big help and I’ve learned to be intentional with my time and to make time for my business.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Aw man, I have so many good child good memories it’s crazy. So I’m from Miami, Florida. Growing up, the beach of course was like home. I remember one Father’s Day we had a big family day BBQ at the beach. My entire family was there celebrating all the fathers in our family. I was probably around 6-7. I remember this so vividly because being with my family, surrounded by love and seeing everyone just so happy and enjoying each other is priceless. Family means so much to me. So yeah, that’s one of my favorite childhood memories. Just being surrounded by fanning and enjoying the beach.
