Conversations with Janae Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janae Wilson.

Hi Janae, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started doing makeup in middle school when my mom started her business with MaryKay. At the time I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup so when she went to work I would go into her bathroom and put some eyeshadow on and then immediately wash it off before she got home. Eventually, she did allow me to wear some eyeliner as I got older. The eyeliner evolved into eyeshadow then lashes, and then lipstick. After years of practice and endless nights in my bedroom, I improved my skills, and my love for artistry grew.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a self-taught makeup artist comes with a lot of frustration. No one around me had the same passion for makeup that I had. I couldn’t ask anyone around me what to do when I was trying to figure out how to properly contour or how to make my eyeliner even. It’s difficult to learn a new skill on your own but with enough time and patience, any struggle can be overcome.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in beauty and fx makeup. I love being able to evaluate a typical beauty look to turn it into something unexpected. I love to challenge myself by recreating looks by artists who inspire me. It’s important to me that artists that inspire me get the credit that they deserve. I’m known for combining comedy with my makeup looks. Cosmetics can be used to tell a story with every piece that’s created. I love expressing my art in a comical way. It’s my way of making myself and others feel good.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be traveling to Mexico. My family and I often do summer trips before the school year starts when I was in middle school. My parents wanted their children to have the opportunity to see different countries around the world. my trip to Mexico allowed me to see how different people around the world live in comparison to the United States. I am a huge history buff so visiting the Maya civilization was the highlight of the trip.
