Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmin Hadrany.
Hi Jasmin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Already as a child, I always loved to express myself creatively, from building things with my hands to drawing to playing piano. However, I never really showed my passion to a lot of people. Only my family and close friends knew that I draw and paint regularly. I think I never really wanted to show that, as I felt this was too private and I was probably scared of other people’s reactions.
After years, a bit more than one year ago, I started an Instagram account that I mainly used for organizing my pieces. After a couple of weeks, I got the first message asking if the works are for sale. This was an incredible moment for me. Seeing that someone is interested in your artwork and wants to have this piece at home. That’s when I decided to show more of my art online and get feedback from the outside world. I sold more and more pieces and I feel honored as I got the pleasure of having my first solo exhibition last year. Having so many people showing up to see my work was amazing. Until now, art is my passion and I am happy to be able to show this side of my life to a worldwide audience.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all and it still is not! Being an artist is tough. You have to face a lot of obstacles. Many people will love what you do but many will not. Being an artist means to be able to face both and accept that. Moreover, entering the art world comes with a lot of struggles, mainly because it is an own network and you need to prove yourself first. This means you have to go to a lot of exhibitions, talk to a LOT of people and get your name out there. There is a lot of people that are happy to help and of course, a lot of that do not want to support an unknown artist.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a figurative artist and depict the human body in all its facets. I remember as a child, I enjoyed to watch other people and observe the shapes of the human body. This quickly began to turn into a hobby, where I drew people I saw on the streets, in parks, etc. It came naturally that I started to focus more on figurative pieces. Today, I try to see the human body as a new canvas where I can play around with forms and shapes, detaching these from the human body as we know it. This results in abstract figurative pieces embodying topics of self-love, gender fluidity and more. I play around with charcoal, acrylic and oil sticks.
Looking back at my career so far, I am extremely proud of my first solo exhibition, where I had the pleasure to show my work at Sneak In in Vienna. This was a truly special moment.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
One aspect I learned during the Covid 19 Crisis is that community and network in general is so important. This is especially true in the creative industry. Your art can be breathtaking. But if you do not know the right people in your network, you will have an incredibly hard time. With Covid, as there were no possibilities of going to exhibitions or art fairs, the focus switched to online connections and networks. That’s why the online presence is a main channel you need to put the effort in for new people to be able to reach you. Covid 19 showed us that we need to have a good community offline as well as online and accelerated this. Therefore, using social media, art magazines, websites and online galleries is something I definitely have my focus on today.
