Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerel Stone.
Hi Jerel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been singing and performing since I could remember. My mom would sing to me while I was in her belly. I was so shy as a child that no one knew I could sing but my mom. She would throw me in these musical programs and singing competitions and I would cry and beg to go home. Fast forward to my teen years, I joined a choir and developed a lot of confidence that pushed me to believe in myself enough to create and release my own music. In 2012, I began posting covers and gaining a following. Then in 2019, I put out my first song and have been releasing ever since.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been smooth. I’ve been auditing for shows and labels since I was about 14. And I would get pretty far then would be cut right at the end. It really took a toll on my self-esteem. I was told that “I over sang” and “did too many runs”. At that time, I thought the only way my dreams could come true was if I was under a label. But then a teacher of mine educated me on the art of independence. And I haven’t looked back since. It’s challenging but worth it. I get to tell myself “yes” after hearing “No” for years! But I still have to fund my career so I do work full time in order to pay my bills and fund my music career. Which sucks because it doesn’t allow me to be as consistent as I’d like to be.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a recording and performing artist who creates R&B and pop music. I originally grew a following from covers and mashups on YouTube and TikTok. I’m most proud of the music I’m working on now from my upcoming Project. I think what sets me apart from others is that I extend myself grace when creating. You know? I don’t hold myself to an unachievable standard. Allowing room for error has given me more room to grow!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
When it comes to music, I’ve risked a lot. I think it’s important to take risks within reason of course. I have to still be responsible. I truly believe I have what it takes to make a positive impact in this industry. So I will bet it all on myself. However, there was a time where I was so eager to big this huge star that I almost signed my life away to a big label. Sometimes risks look like saying “No” to what you think may have been your only chance.
