Conversations with Kaii Love

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaii Love.

Hi Kaii, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always been into music since I was a little girl. From singing in the chorus in 7th-8th grade, being taught how to bob my head to the beat of a song, playing the piano and keyboard in 11th-12th grade and just always wanting to get up and dance whenever a song came on. I decided to attend Atlanta Metropolitan State College for the spring semester of 2014 but ironically, even though I was passionate about music, I chose pre-nursing as my major.

I can remember at the age of nine, I wanted to become a pediatrician. I’ve always wanted to help others. However, I eventually realized that the pre-nursing major did not resonate with me.  After talking to my mom about how I was feeling, she suggested that I minor in music. After pondering over what I really wanted to do, I decided to change my major to music.  In the Spring of 2015, I switched my major to music.  Around 2016, I decided to dive deeper into my craft and what I planned to actually do in the world of music. I started to lean more towards audio engineering.  One day, I noticed a girl making beats on her phone which blew me away.  I asked her about the app she was using on her phone, and she said it was GarageBand that comes already pre-installed on all iPhones.

After she told me that, I immediately got on my phone and searched for the app and that is where it all started. From playing around with it and learning all the features they had to offer, I created my very first beat. I was excited about having another way to show my creative talent and what I love most. There were times when I began to lose faith in my talent. I didn’t believe I was good enough to put myself out there for the world to hear. So here we are today, in 2022, the year I claimed would be the year of re-inventing myself.  This year has definitely been an evolving one for me in all the best ways possible. I am learning new things and growing in ways I couldn’t have imagined before.  I finally renewed my faith within myself, in my work, and decided to register my beats and post them on social media platforms for the world to hear.  A lot of my beats, I don’t create with the intention for lyrics, but I am ALWAYS open to anyone who wants to collaborate and work to create art for the ears of others. I don’t label myself as just a music producer because I have a lot more in store and will be sharing it with the world very soon.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has been a ride, to say the least. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, called systemic lupus in the Fall of 2013. Right after my high school graduation is when my symptoms began.  I was in and out of doctor’s offices, having indescribable pain, and experiencing faint/dizzy spells. Going through all of that put me in limbo and I could not attend my freshman semester of college. It also put me in a position where I needed to choose a school closer to home and my mom in case anything were to happen. Around November-December of 2014, my body attacked my kidneys and they started to leak fluid. January of 2015, I caught pneumonia and had an attack on campus resulting in me having to be rushed to the hospital by ambulance. I was hospitalized for more than a month. Oh yeah, they had also shut my kidneys down during my first day in the hospital. They thought my gallbladder was failing so they used an MRI body scan to check my organs and the contrast dye they gave me to drink caused my kidneys to shut down.  So, they had to drain my lungs and after they did that, they focused on reviving my kidneys and removing the excess fluids in my body due to my kidneys were not functioning.  Luckily, they were able to accomplish everything, and I didn’t have to undergo dialysis treatments for the rest of my life.  I was released from the hospital just in time to celebrate my 20th birthday. Whew! In 2019-2020, I was in a domestic violence relationship and completely lost myself.  It caused me to lose relationships with my close friends and family.  When I was finally able to get out of that toxic relationship, I had decided to take the time to heal properly from everything I had went through and started my spiritual journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I consider myself a loop Queen because I take different loops and create sounds that help me and others just get away from reality and into a zone.  I also like to think of myself as an open space for others to release negative emotions since I have started my spiritual journey. What I am most proud of is the faith I instilled within myself to push myself to show the world what I have to offer. I believe that my natural rebellious side that doesn’t allow me to conform to society’s views and the dictation of others which allows me to be my true authentic self. There’s only one Kaii Love, so I believe my authenticity is what sets me apart from others.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The qualities and characteristics that I feel are most important to my success are self-discipline, self-determination, persistence, the ability to connect with others but also LOVE for what I do.
