Conversations with Katie Jenkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Jenkins

Hi Katie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I embarked on my musical journey in Wales, where my early passion for composition flourished. Moving to New York City was transformative, enabling me to establish myself as a prominent composer and music producer renowned for collaborative excellence. I’ve forged supportive environments that enhance creative synergy, as seen in my diverse portfolio spanning music for choirs, piano, and instrumental compositions published by industry leaders like Hal Leonard and Murphy Music Press. My career has been punctuated by numerous accolades, including prestigious awards such as the Grand Prize at the International Women’s Brass Festival and recognition from the New York Federation of Music. Graduating from The Juilliard School and receiving the Norman Benzaquen Career Grant really fuelled my artistry and entrepreneurial spirit.

My compositions are played all over the world and are featured prominently in esteemed venues and festivals from National Sawdust to BBC Hoddinott Hall, and acclaimed film festivals including Berlin and New York International Film Awards. My collaborations extend across disciplines, from crafting music for NASA and New York Fashion Week to creating commissioned works for esteemed dance companies like Chamber Dance Project and Stefanie Nelson Dance Company. As an educator, I impart my expertise at The Juilliard Pre-College, teaching Music Technology and Screen Scoring, and serve as a steering committee member of the Society of Composers and Lyricists, NYC. Currently, I am working on an original ballet for Revolve Dance Project and preparing a commissioned piece for The Juilliard Orchestra, marking milestones in my ongoing quest to innovate and inspire through music.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My path to success has not been without its challenges. Overcoming obstacles such as navigating the competitive landscape of the music industry and managing the pressures of deadlines and creative expectations has been a constant test of resilience for me. Additionally, establishing myself in a new cultural and professional environment upon moving to New York City posed its own set of challenges, as it was a world away from the Wales where I grew up. I find the challenge of meeting tight deadlines very inspiring for generating musical ideas; committing to a first idea really brings out creativity in a different way than if I have a very long time to write a composition!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work spans a wide range of musical genres and platforms, including compositions for choir, piano, and instrumental ensembles, as well as collaborations in film, dance, and fashion. I specialize in creating vibrant, emotive music that resonates deeply with audiences, whether on stage at prestigious venues like National Sawdust and Alice Tully Hall, or on screen at international film festivals. Known for my strength in collaborative projects, I love working with other thriving artists leading to numerous commissions from esteemed organizations such as the New York City Ballet-affiliated New York Choreographic Institute and New York Fashion Week Shows. I take immense pride in my ability to blend artistic innovation with entrepreneurial acumen, which has garnered me accolades such as the Norman Benzaquen Career Grant from The Juilliard School and recognition in competitions like the International Women’s Brass Festival and EXPO: New Works. What sets me apart is my commitment to collaboration; pushing boundaries in music composition and involving voices from across the world. I also love embracing music technologies and exploring how we can create new sounds for immersive musical experiences. Currently, I am most proud of my commissioned ballet for Revolve Dance Festival and the upcoming premiere of a new work with The Juilliard Orchestra, continuing to explore new horizons in music that inspire and connect with diverse audiences worldwide.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I owe so much to the invaluable support of mentors, collaborators, and advocates throughout my career. At The Juilliard School, my teacher Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Melinda Wagner played a pivotal role in shaping my artistic voice and providing guidance during my formative years. The Henry Mancini Fellowship also provided crucial financial support and recognition, enabling me to focus on honing my craft. In the professional realm, I am grateful for all my collaborators and clients that trusted in my creative visions! I am very lucky to have an amazing network of musicians who perform my music; it is such a wonderful feeling to collaborate with friends.
