Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelvin Summerhill.
Hi Kelvin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I embarked on my journey in the world of creativity as an actor, driven by an unwavering passion for the craft since childhood. This early inclination towards acting became the driving force behind my aspirations. As I moved to New York to pursue my acting dreams, I encountered a significant realization – the scarcity of projects that resonated with my core passions. I yearned for roles where the leading characters, much like myself, navigated through captivating and imaginative realms. This realization marked the genesis of my venture into writing.
Writing, I found, is akin to embodying characters on stage, except it takes place on the pages of a script. This discovery propelled me to channel my creativity into storytelling through the written word. Soon after, I relocated to Atlanta and joined the University of Georgia’s newly launched MFA in film program. Here, I unearthed a newfound passion for directing, a role that enables me to guide narratives and bring them to life visually.
Reflecting on my trajectory, I am humbled and grateful to share that my inaugural film has successfully made its debut on the film festival circuit. This accomplishment not only underscores my growth and dedication but also affirms that my evolution from an aspiring actor to a multifaceted creative encompassing writing and directing was a path that unfolded naturally and purposefully.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In the words of Langston Hughes’ poem ‘Mother to Son,’ ‘Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.’ At the peak of grad school, just as I embarked on creating my thesis film, I was diagnosed with ADHD and Bipolar disorder. I channeled this diagnosis and my desire to honor my recently deceased friend, whom I lost to a mental health crisis, into transforming my thesis film into ‘Black Butterfly.’ Converting my personal experiences into healing art became essential, allowing others to witness that despite seemingly insurmountable struggles, having faith can lead to rising above and embracing one’s best life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an artist with a specialization in the film medium. My skill set encompasses writing, directing, producing, and acting. The work that I am most proud of is my debut film, ‘Black Butterfly.’ This project holds significant personal meaning as it originates from a deeply emotional place. Despite its origins, I’m pleased to see how strongly it is connecting with diverse audiences. ‘Black Butterfly’ not only tells a story but also serves as a platform to raise awareness about mental health and foster healing.
What sets me apart from others is my innate industriousness and resilience. These qualities have driven me to navigate challenges and continue pushing the boundaries of my creative pursuits. It’s this determination that has led my debut film to be showcased at two Oscar-qualifying film festivals and eight other film festivals and counting.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a shy yet witty and joyful child. My interests included films and music. During my formative years, playing the saxophone became my primary creative outlet.
