Conversations with Kenya Cottrell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenya Cottrell.

Hi Kenya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I didn’t start IamSexyFit Dance and Fitness as a business idea—I started it from a personal need. Like many women, I spent years pouring into my career, my family, and everyone around me, while quietly putting myself last. I was successful on paper, but disconnected from my body and the confident, feminine woman I knew I was meant to be.

Movement became my reset. Dance and fitness gave me back my strength, my confidence, and eventually my voice. I realized I wasn’t alone—so many high-performing women were craving a space where they could work out, feel sexy, and be themselves without judgment.

I opened IamSexyFit in Stonecrest, Georgia with a simple vision: create a luxury, welcoming environment where women could reconnect with themselves through movement and community. What started as small classes quickly grew into a full studio offering pole fitness, chair dance, lyra hoop, and group fitness—along with sold-out events and transformational programs.

Today, IamSexyFit is more than a studio. It’s a lifestyle brand and a sisterhood. I’ve had the privilege of watching women walk in unsure and walk out confident, energized, and standing taller in every area of their lives. That transformation is what keeps me going—and it’s only the beginning.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Building a business—especially a brick-and-mortar one—comes with challenges you don’t fully understand until you’re in it. Opening a physical studio was far more expensive than I expected, and I had to learn quickly how to manage overhead, cash flow, staffing, and long-term sustainability while still growing a brand from the ground up.

In the early stages, I wore every hat—owner, instructor, marketer, administrator—while simultaneously teaching myself the financial side of running a brick-and-mortar business. I had to figure out pricing, systems, and structure in real time, often while pushing through self-doubt and financial pressure.

One of the biggest lessons was realizing that passion alone isn’t enough. Vision needs discipline, numbers, and strategy behind it. I had to learn how to grow the business while protecting it financially—and how to trust myself enough to make bold decisions.

Those challenges didn’t slow me down—they sharpened me. They shaped me into a stronger CEO and helped build IamSexyFit into a resilient, intentional space that supports women inside and outside the studio.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My professional life is deeply shaped by who I am personally. I’m a Registered Nurse with an MBA, a wife, and a mother of four—so I understand, firsthand, what it feels like to carry responsibility for everyone else while quietly putting yourself last. My career has always centered on caring for others, whether that was at the bedside as a nurse or in leadership roles that required strategy, structure, and accountability.

That combination of healthcare and business naturally led me to create IamSexyFit Dance and Fitness. I saw how stress, burnout, and disconnection were showing up in women long before it turned into something more serious. Movement became my way of helping women prevent burnout, reconnect with their bodies, and prioritize themselves again—without guilt.

What I’m most proud of is building a space that reflects real life. IamSexyFit was created for women who are juggling careers, families, and expectations, yet still want to feel strong, confident, and feminine. My background allows me to approach fitness with both compassion and intention—it’s not about extremes, it’s about sustainability, confidence, and wellness that fits into real, busy lives.

What sets me apart is that I don’t teach from theory—I teach from lived experience. Everything I’ve learned as a nurse, business leader, wife, and mother is woven into how I serve women today. My work is a reflection of my life, and my life is the reason the work matters.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck hasn’t played a role in my business. What I’ve built is the result of intentional decisions, consistency, and the willingness to learn as I go. Every opportunity came from showing up, taking responsibility, and doing the work—especially when it wasn’t easy. I believe success is created through preparation and persistence, not chance.
