Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Clark.
Hi Kevin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
Cooking has been a big part of my life since I was 9 years old. My mom was the type of person who could make much out of a little. All it took was a few ingredients in the kitchen, and she would prepare something like you’ve never tasted before. My father and I spent a lot of time around the grill. He taught me the essence of being patient and not rushing.
My aunts provided the final touches. I never really paid attention to the recipes, but I would always be first in line to sample whatever they were putting on the table. I myself became a melting pot of knowledge, using various skill sets and cooking techniques from various family members. I was the cook for myself and my roommates in college.
Things really took off for me with a potluck lunch at work… yes, a potluck. My coworkers got a taste of my skills and immediately insisted that I bring in more. It got to the point where they were willing to pay for it. Long story short, today I’m producing meals and spreads for multiple clients. It was the birth of KevCooks4U.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road definitely hasn’t been smooth. Working in the food industry is definitely a monster of its own. You try to please all your customers by remaining consistent and keeping things reasonable in price. However, the onset of COVID-19 altered the landscape drastically.
Suddenly, the mere idea of “fellowship around food” became fraught with risks. Yet, the essence of my business lies in fostering fellowship through culinary experiences. Despite the challenges, I adapted, refusing to compromise on quality. Needless to say, the year 2019 marked a profound shift for countless business owners.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I currently work as a full-time firefighter. I chose this job because as a child I thought it would be fun and it keeps me from being behind a desk 24/7. No offense to those who do so, it’s just not for me. I believe I was born to serve my community. Ironically, both my full-time job and my business thrive on the idea of service; it’s just naturally a part of my nature.
What sets me apart from others is that I prioritize addressing people’s needs. We all have wants and needs, but I believe needs are most important. Whether it’s a customer placing a catering order or a citizen in an emergency, my role is to cater to them and ensure their needs are met.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I envision the business expanding within the next 5 to 10 years. However, I find myself torn between my desires for its direction and what may be necessary for its growth. Part of me feels compelled to seize control and dictate its path, while another part urges me to go with the flow. This is more so an illustration of my faith in God and the journey He has guided me on thus far.
I’m hesitant to fully commit to my own plans, fearing they may not align with His greater purpose. I’ve been reminded that my dreams pale in comparison to what He has in store for me. Therefore, I choose to place my trust in Him and His divine plan.
