Conversations with Kiley Murphy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiley Murphy.

Hi Kiley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started off in a cosmetology program in high school not even knowing anything about nails or hair, but just knowing I wanted to be in the beauty field and wanting to be my own boss. It was a three years program from 10th grade to 12th grade. The first year is when we learned the knowledge about nails and techniques and I just fell in love. At this time, I was about 15 years old already planning out my nail career and future. I started to practice more and more until I felt like I was good enough to take clients. Of course, I gave up plenty of times and got discouraged but it wasn’t in me to just stop and not succeed. I started out taking clients in my room while I was in school. This really helped me stay consistent and build my confidence. I then graduated high school and graduated from the cosmetology program with my diploma and cosmetology license at 17. After that is when I really took off my with career. Right after school, I started working in a salon and built my clientele. That was definitely a challenge but I am grateful for it all. This year I am turning 19 years old and I now work in a suite in my own room doing nails. Looking back to when I was 15 years old, I never imagined I would take off like this, but I am very humbled and blessed to be so young with my career already taking off. I couldn’t have done this without my cosmetology teachers, Mrs. Trina and Mrs. Kourtney. Also my mom, dad, and supportive friends.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first started doing nails, there definitely were challenges. It took me forever to learn how to lay the acrylic, learn to draw designs, and shape the nail. I stayed up late at night after school and even on weekends just practicing to get better and with me being consistent with that, I just kept getting better. The main challenge I had when I started working was gaining clientele. It is so hard to find people who really will stuck with you from beginning to end, but now I have a hand full of them that I appreciate so much. Time management and managing my money was something I definitely struggled with at first. You did not want to overbook clients or not have time for yourself so I had to learn that along the way. Doing nails is fast money, but you also have to think about nails expenses like booth rent supplies, and also think about your personal expenses. With all this being said. I still have a lot to improve on and know that I can only get better and better.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a licensed cosmetologist that specializes in nails. My nail business name is “KlawedByKaydollaz”. Every nail set I do, I try to be creative and try new techniques. A lot of my clients love to book freestyles because they know how creative I can get with the design of the nail. I am most proud of how far I have become with my creativity. To me, nails is a form of art and you can do almost anything if you put your mind to it.

What’s next?
My plan eventually is to open up a salon in a big city with nails, hair, lashes, makeup etc. I love to see everybody succeed doing something they love doing. I know this will take a lot of planning to get it to how I want to be, but I know there is nothing I can’t do! With my potential and mindset, I believe I can do it all. I am only 18 years old with a vision and I plan on reaching every goal I set for myself and when it comes to my future and owning my own salon!
