Conversations with Kimberly Payne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Payne.

Kimberly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Treat Slayer started off as a hobby. After my daughter started school, I would make chocolate-covered holiday-themed treats for her class. This led to friends and family asking me to make treats for various events. I had always been creative, so having the knack to design the treats was already there. I didn’t have a love for baking/cooking at all, but I decided I would try to make my Rice Krispies and Chocolate from scratch. I looked up an easy to follow recipe online and gave it a go and everyone loved them. My friends suggested that I should sell them. I would brush it off because I didn’t think anyone would be interested in purchasing my treats. In my eyes, they were good but not worthy of being sold. I thought like they had to be perfect and my friends were only trying to boost my confidence.

Never in a million years did I think things would pan out to what they are today. After giving it more thought, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try. In February of 2019, I drafted up my price list, a few mock-ups, and posted them online. Not even 5 minutes had passed before I got my first order. In a matter of weeks, I was making treat orders 3 to 4 times a week! By the beginning of May, I was making treats every day to the point where I would be in over my head. It all happened so fast. I really couldn’t believe it! Our customer base has grown substantially.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s actually been pretty smooth. However, there have definitely been certain obstacles that I had to overcome. I’m a single mother facing the obstacles of still making sure I have time to get my daughter from point A to point B with extracurricular activities and still coming home and working late nights, sometimes pulling all-nighters to complete orders. Another obstacle I’ve had to overcome is to not compare myself to others and that being an entrepreneur is not for the weak. I quickly realized that as an entrepreneur, I had to wear many hats. I had to be my own accountant, marketer, janitor, delivery driver, and everything else. People often think that being an entrepreneur is easy and life of glitz and glam when it’s not. Having a good idea is one thing, being business-minded is another. I quickly learned that there were many things that needed to be done to successfully be in business and it was very overwhelming.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Treat Slayer is a home-based business that specializes in custom-decorated sugar cookies and chocolate-covered confections. My menu also includes cupcakes, dessert shooters, strawberries, mini donuts and cake pops. My decorated sugar cookies are my most requested item that lead to my greatest success within the business. I am most proud of our customer service and commitment to providing a quality product every time. What sets Treat Slayer apart from others is our attention to detail, the neatness of our work, passion, drive, and our dedication to creating an experience like no other. One thing we will never do is cut corners. Using only premium ingredients, we create treats that set the bar high for what treats should be. Believe is what makes the business stand out. Our treats are available for pick up locally and shipped nationwide which means you can have them delivered to your front door!

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as meeting a combination of business and personal goals. I believe that effective goals motivate me to push myself and grow, and as a result of meeting such goals, it can contribute to even greater growth in the future.
