Today we’d like to introduce you to Kofi B.
Hi Kofi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in my hometown of Akron, OH, I was always in the search for a passion. I tried a number of things, but music ended up being the thing for me. I started at eight and never looked back.
Simply put, music saved my life. It was something that I always gravitated to no matter the mood I was in. Most importantly, growing up in the inner cities of Akron, OH in a single-parent household, music kept me focused and determined to not be a product of the negative environment I was in.
In my teen years, I took music very seriously. It was my way out. As I progressed in music, I reached goals within four years of what I initially thought would take 40 (because it usually does!). I always remember sitting in class in my middle school (Miller South School for Visual & Performing Arts) daydreaming about the idea of playing with an orchestra, headlining my own show in big theaters in my hometown and always having my dreams shot down by others who didn’t believe I could do it. But I never stopped persevering.
Subsequently, it lead me to where I am right now—being a 22-year-old college student at Berklee College of Music, a finalist in “Showtime At The Apollo” (2019), winning an award from President Obama & The White House (2014) and recently garnering 2 Emmy Nominations this year. I’d say music has been pretty good if you ask me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My most important quality to many successes in my life has been my resilience.
My entire life, I’ve conditioned myself to never stop at the first “no”. I’m a true believer that there is always ONE individual out there ready to give a yes to your dream, to your vision, to joining your fanbase, to being a part of the journey you’re on! And it only takes one person to spark a change. One individual could spark a city. That city could ignite a state. That state could revolutionize a nation. And that nation could change the world!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a pianist, producer, and public speaker! I love creating content and story-telling. What sets me apart from others is my entertainment value. I love to put on a show! Being a pianist and having the ability to move a crowd emotionally the way that I do when I’m on a stage is simply a blessing from the Man above.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Well God, firstly. Without Him, I wouldn’t be doing any of this. But ultimately, the accolades must go to my mother (Carolyn Bland-Boakye). The sacrifices she made early on to ensure the successes of not only myself but my older brothers as well is something that is too great and valuable to be overlooked. If it wasn’t for those sacrifices, we wouldn’t be doing this interview right now.
Mama if you’re reading this, thank you for everything. I hope I continue to make you proud! Love you always.
