Today we’d like to introduce you to Kourtney B..
Kourtney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started being a young kid full of energy to do any and everything. Growing up I remember I wanted to be a dancer of any kind of sort whether it was being a professional dancer, dancing on stage with a famous artist or opening up my own studio and teaching my own choreography. It all sounded like an official plan to me until my 4th grade year of elementary school, I remember being in music class always humming or singing a little tune here or there. Never thinking much of it because as you already know music has always been my first love. We had a moving up ceremony coming that week and it was a big thing for 4th graders, back then for every performance show we had was us performing our instruments. Again, me being in my music class I would always be singing, but that is when my music teacher Ms. Jocson noticed something in me that I didn’t know I had. She kept me back from class that day and gave me back that sheet of music again to sing to her, me being confused and curious I did what she asked.
I will never forget her facial expression….she had this proud look of excitement. She couldn’t help herself but to cry and said to me, “You have a gift…you have to sing this piece for the ceremony”. I was completely nervous, never did I ever have a solo piece and to sing it in front of our parents for the ceremony turned my stomach into knots. When the ceremony came, and it was my turn to do my solo act, I couldn’t help but to feel so excited but overwhelmed at the same time. I just wanted to make my teacher proud especially my parents out in the audience. I will never forget my mom saying to me “She was sitting in the audience”, wondering to herself “Wow, that child sounds really good” until another parent (her friend) said, “Girl! That’s your child right there” and my mom couldn’t believe her eyes, she cried so hard that day. Singing wasn’t my first choice, but I am so glad it found me. Singing on that stage made me feel so alive and happy, feeling of telling your story for everyone to capture the moment with you.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t say struggles but a few bumps in the road definitely never stopped me from accomplishing my dreams. Pursuing my career and figuring out my artistry as I’ve grown has always been a molding milestone for me. Living in a small town where you don’t have much traffic coming through your city, you have to work ten times harder to be seen or be reached by people in the industry or have your music heard globally. Of course, you’ll have a couple of no’s and yes’s, but that’s all a part of the process. In other words, don’t let it determine your path. As an artist, you have the right to create a space that is ethnically you and unique and no one can take that away from you. You have to find the beauty in everything you do or else it will be a burden to you and you will lose all motivation.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an Artist, Singer, and Songwriter. My sound specializes in R&B with pop appeal. Coming from my first single “Hold On Boy” in 2018, I have been climbing to the top ever since. Marking my debut single “ Where You Been At” in 2019 has kept the ball rolling in my court… I have been working hard to make a name for myself, performing at shows, making music, and other collaborative works. I want to feel connected with my fans and to tell my story… In the year of 2022 coming out with another major hit “Undefeated” I wanted to take my fans into my world, of how I overcame my journey and was undefeated. My ultimate goal is to make timeless music, music that speaks to your soul. In the same year, I came out with her second debut single “Options” hitting the charts globally, making it one of my fan-favorite songs. Spotify for Artists of the Year, my network streamed 20.9k with 7.9k listeners. The thing that really sets me apart as an artist is being relatable in all aspects and to be my authentic self. I think it is important to just be yourself because people are always going to like or dislike you but at the end of the day, you have to be happy with who you are. No one can tell you otherwise.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory would be a singing /dancing battle with my older sister Kendall every weekend. It would always be a friendly competition to see who got the best moves and vocals. My other older sister Krystina, would always be recording us every time she came over to babysit. So when it became time to battle it out, me and my sister Kendall would always go so hard to see who was the best. But all in all, looking back and reminiscing on the fact that we were so young and we had no care in the world, was a time to be alive. So my advice to anyone reading this is don’t be in a rush to be an adult, try to stay young and free forever. Enjoy your journey.
