Conversations with Dandy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dandy.

Hi Dandy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a love for music from a young age. Growing up in a Jamaican Christian church as a kid, my Dad played the bass and I learned to play the drums for a little bit, so rhythm and basslines are almost second nature. It wasn’t until I was an adult, one of my coworkers noticed my range in music from Hall & Oates to McFadden & Whitehead, where he goes, I think you might like djing… Super apprehensive at first, eventually caved went to his house to touch a vinyl traktor setup, and been hooked ever since. I’ve always loved house and EDM since the age of 15? And the rest is just consistent learning on techniques, differences on sounds, and taste

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not, and it never will be until you make it I suppose. But the most difficult thing is the self-doubt, can you do it? Do people care? No one reallllly listens, took almost 2 years before my first gig, and another 6-8 months after that until I really started to play more consistent gigs. The second hardest thing is people and their narratives they have about you. Thats self-explanatory.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a dj that specializes in house music. Specifically tech house. I’m most proud of going from a warehouse to playing at Imagine Music Festival within my first 10 months of my first year actually playing. Then my most recent show I got to open for a headliner on direct support for a sold-out show. I think I have my own style that makes it a DANDY set, so I don’t sound like every other dj.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Music Knowledge, people skills, work ethic, and perseverance.
