Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Joyner.
Hi Kyra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Kyra Joyner , a 23 year old hairstylist from Birmingham, AL. I am the owner of KolorbyKDye. Well when I was 15 years old, I knew I wanted to do hair. I had toured a cosmetology school then, but it just wasn’t the right time. While I was a teenager, I thought a lot about what I wanted to do in the beauty industry. I taught myself how to braid and how to color hair in the process. In 2020, I enrolled in cosmetology school at Aveda. That was when I really put action behind starting KolorByKDye. Since school was basically a full-time job, I started doing hair at home. My confidence was building, and I loved being in school. Learning different techniques and hair textures excites me, and I was ready to find the things I love to do. During my first couple of weeks of school, my car got repossessed and life was lifing! That didn’t stop me from making it to school. Being at Aveda was up and down but through it all I graduated in December of 2021. After school, I studied for my test for a few months then eventually got my license in October of 2022. I was still doing hair from home, practicing my craft, and making connections with others. December 2022 I was working at a salon for a few months before I got a salon suite in July 2023. Getting my own salon suite did wonders for my business. KolorByKDye has grown so much in the last year. I have been able to reconnect with past clients and make new connections with new clients.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t think there is any such thing as a smooth road when it comes to purpose. I’m 2017 my mother and I became homeless due to the loss of her job. Went through a lot from the year of 2017 – 2021. I knew what we were going through wouldn’t last forever but it felt like that in the moment. Fast forward to 2020, I came back to Birmingham with literally my truck and my stuff. Worked and saved for my own place then a few months later my mom came back to Birmingham with me. That year my mother created her own business, I lost my job and she told me to go to school while she held down things at home.
November 2020, I started school, two weeks later my car got repossessed. A lot of other things went on but I was determined to finish school and get my cosmetology license. Although school and life was a rollercoaster, I knew God had a purpose for me. It wasn’t an easy journey but it was worth it. The first few months after I graduated school I was in and out of doing hair, my confidence went down because I was trying to get hired doing what I loved but it seemed like it was harder than I thought it was going to be. I truly believe being persistent gets you a long way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hairstylist specializing in natural hair, protective styles, and color. I am most known for my braids, but I enjoy doing hair of all textures. I am most proud of the growth of my business and the growth I’ve seen in myself. What sets me apart from others is my energy, the way I take care of my client’s hair, my personality, and how I make my clients feel they are in a safe space in my chair.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was shy around others except my family. I’d say I became more comfortable with myself when I became a teenager. I love to joke and laugh and be goofy because life is already so serious. I’ve always had an interest in fashion, hair, and colors. Things that are different or not conventional are most likely what I am drawn to. Some would say I’m spoiled by my family but I think I’m just loved a little extra.
