Today we’d like to introduce you to Latonya Black Gilliard.
Hi Latonya Black, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began training with Larry Leon Hamilton, the founder of the North Carolina Black Repertory Company. I learned how to create an artistic, creative group of artists in such a way that synergy drives the huge success of musicals, plays, independent works and community collaboration. Moving to Los Angeles, my focus changed to film and independent digital creations. Now, as an actor. Producer, director, writer, singer and certified Nutritionist, I am carving my niche as a re-invented artist that is now thriving in the Atlanta area. New projects, new branding, new voice! We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road is never smooth when you face your own insecurities. Raising talented children, living paycheck to paycheck and being in a feast or famine industry is a lesson within itself.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the Founder of Ithe Revelation Cultural Arts Center. A platform for local playwrights, actors, singers, dancers and musicians to develop and showcase their gifts and talents. Also to instruct and assist performers and production teams with creative expression in order to facilitate personal growth, artistic development and a sense of community.
I am most proud of the Sistars Workshop Party, a group of women in the entertainment industry that come together as a nurturing and supportive Sisterhood that ensures women in our community don’t suffer in silence as we do our best to thrive in this world.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Our family was huge. My grandparents had 14 children and my cousins were my first best friends. Family dinners were the norm and many great memories of fun, history and shenanigans were created.
