Today we’d like to introduce you to Leigh Larie
Hi Leigh, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It’s fascinating how early entrepreneurial instincts can emerge! Looking back, I’ve always had that hustler spirit. I mean, who starts a coffee stand at 10 years old instead of a lemonade stand? But that’s exactly what I did! I’d be up before dawn, setting up shop on a busy corner in my neighborhood, selling cups of coffee for a dollar and selling out every single time. That experience really ingrained in me the importance of thinking outside the box and finding creative solutions.
That same drive led me to the world of radio and music. Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, I got my start in the industry as an on-air personality with 103.1 WEUP in Huntsville, Alabama while attending Alabama A&M University. Immersing myself in the music scene, I further honed my skills in music promotions and artist development after graduating with a degree in marketing. This experience allowed me to not only express my creativity but also to nurture my entrepreneurial spirit and put my marketing knowledge to practical use. It truly ignited a passion in me that continues to fuel my work today.
Since then, I’ve navigated through various industries, absorbing valuable experiences and cultivating my passions along the way. My love for arts, entertainment, business, and consulting ultimately culminated in the creation of my own brand, which encompasses my work as a consultant, speaker, and podcast host. My podcast, Dirty Roses Podcast, provides a platform to engage in raw and unfiltered conversations that challenge societal norms and inspire personal growth.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road! Building a career and a brand that aligns with your passions takes a lot of grit and resilience. Just like Tupac said, “I don’t want it if it’s that easy!” And he was right! The most successful people often have a trail of failures behind them, and I’m no exception. I’ve learned so much from those “failures” – they’ve been essential stepping stones on my path to growth.
Here are some of the specific challenges I’ve encountered:
• Breaking into the music industry as a woman: It’s no secret that the music industry can be a tough environment, especially for women. Early on, I faced my share of sexism and had to work even harder to prove myself and have my voice heard. This experience fueled my passion for empowering women, which is a recurring theme in my work today.
• Balancing creativity with business: Finding that sweet spot between creative expression and the practical demands of running a business is an ongoing challenge. It requires constant juggling and learning to wear many hats – from artist to entrepreneur to marketer.
• Overcoming self-doubt: Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve battled with self-doubt and imposter syndrome. It’s a continuous process to quiet those inner critics and trust my instincts.
• Navigating the ever-changing digital landscape: In today’s world, staying ahead of the curve in digital marketing and online presence is crucial. Adapting to new technologies and platforms has been, and continues to be, a constant learning process.
• Learning from past mistakes: I’ve had my share of setbacks, from businesses that never quite got off the ground to ideas that fizzled out due to fear of failure (or even fear of success!). I’ve learned some expensive lessons about the importance of documenting everything, protecting my ideas, and being selective about who I trust.
These challenges have taught me invaluable lessons. I’ve learned to:
• Document everything: This keeps me on track, helps me prioritize tasks, and prevents costly mistakes.
• Protect my ideas: Not everyone deserves to hear your plans. It’s crucial to be selective about who you share your vision with.
• Use contracts: Contracts are essential, even with close friends and family. They protect everyone involved and ensure clear communication.
• Be mindful of advice: Not all advice is good advice. It’s important to be intentional about who you seek guidance from.
• Surround myself with the right people: Building a strong network of supportive and skilled individuals is crucial for success.
• Stay passionate: Never lose sight of your passion and purpose. They are the fuel that keeps you going.
• Never stop learning: The world is constantly changing, and it’s essential to remain a lifelong student of your craft.
Despite the hurdles, I’ve learned to embrace the challenges as opportunities for growth. Each obstacle has made me stronger, more resilient, and more determined to succeed. I believe that vulnerability and authenticity are essential, and I’m not afraid to share my struggles and lessons learned along the way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

What sets me apart?
• My diverse experiences: From my early days as a young entrepreneur with a coffee stand to my work in the music industry, youth mentorship, and community advocacy, my diverse experiences have shaped my unique perspective and approach.
• My authenticity and vulnerability: I’m not afraid to share my own struggles and triumphs, and I believe that creates a space for others to do the same.

Ultimately, I see myself as a facilitator of growth and change. I’m driven by a desire to create a more equitable and inclusive world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a curious and driven kid. I loved learning, solving problems, and achieving goals. Always had a strong sense of community and a passion for helping others, especially younger folks. Music was my constant companion – I’d spend hours playing vinyl records, making up dance routines, and dreaming of a future where I could express my creativity. Even then, I had that entrepreneurial spirit, always scheming up ways to make a little money and envisioning myself as the boss of my own company.
As I got older, my interests expanded, but that core drive to learn and create remained. I was involved in everything from entrepreneurship camps and mentorship programs to culturally specific clubs and fundraising activities. I was determined to excel in every area, pushing boundaries and soaking up knowledge like a sponge. Looking back, I realize those experiences were laying the foundation for the work I do today.
It’s funny how life takes you in unexpected directions. I initially envisioned myself as an advertising executive for a major shoe company, maybe even moonlighting as an FBI agent! But fate had other plans. After attending Alabama A&M University (go Bulldogs!), I stumbled into the world of radio and music. That experience reignited my love for the creative industries and set me on a new path.
Since then, I’ve worn many hats – on-air radio personality, music promoter, consultant, speaker, and now podcast host. I’ve navigated the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, learned valuable lessons from both successes and failures, and discovered the power of authentic communication.
Through it all, those core values I developed growing up – community, creativity, and empowerment – have remained constant. They inform my work with the Black Parent Initiative, where I’m passionate about supporting Black families and advocating for equity. They fuel my podcast, Dirty Roses, where I create a space for raw and unfiltered conversations about life, relationships, and personal growth. And they guide my work as a consultant and speaker, where I help others find their voice and share their stories with the world.
I’m a 42-year-old Black woman, born and raised in Portland, Oregon, with deep family roots in Louisiana and a strong connection to the South, especially Huntsville, Alabama, and Atlanta, Georgia. Those diverse influences have shaped my perspective and given me a unique understanding of the challenges and triumphs faced by Black communities across the country.
I’m proud of the work I do and the impact I’m able to make. I’m excited to continue this journey of growth and learning, using my voice and my platform to empower others and create positive change.
