Today we’d like to introduce you to Litina Rainwater

Hi Litina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Embarking on a journey that seamlessly intertwines cultural roots with a passion for capturing life’s moments, my story as a photographer is a testament to resilience, determination, and the pursuit of artistic fulfillment.

Born in the sun-soaked landscapes of Florida, yet deeply rooted in the vibrant culture of Jamaica, my journey as a photographer is as rich and diverse as my heritage. Growing up amidst the lush greenery of Stone Mountain, GA, I found solace and inspiration in the beauty that surrounded me.

Graduating high school in 2010 marked the beginning of my formal pursuit of the art form, as I embarked on my academic journey at Georgia Perimeter College. There, I honed my skills and earned an associate degree in Film Studies, laying the groundwork for what was to become a lifelong devotion to the craft.

My professional odyssey commenced at Lifetouch, now Shutterfly, where I embarked on a transformative trajectory. Beginning as a portrait photographer, I ascended through the ranks, evolving into roles of increasing responsibility—from Studio Assistant Manager to Studio Manager, ultimately assuming the mantle of Head of the Outdoor Photography Division in Georgia. These experiences instilled in me invaluable insights into the nuances of the craft, and a profound appreciation for the art of visual storytelling.

Yet, as I reached the pinnacle of my professional accomplishments, I felt a stirring within me—a longing for deeper artistic expression and mastery of my craft. This realization propelled me back into the hallowed halls of academia, where I pursued a photography degree at Gwinnett Technical College.

Life, however, had more chapters to unveil. In the midst of this transformative period, I forged my own family, exchanging vows with my long-time partner and welcoming a beautiful baby girl into our lives. Balancing the joys of parenthood with my evolving career, I ventured into diverse realms of photography, embracing the freedom of self-employment as a portrait photographer while also serving as a contracted digital technician

Armed with newfound knowledge and a relentless passion for my art, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, exploring the myriad facets of photography. From capturing intimate portraits to serving as a contracted digital technician, I embraced every opportunity to refine my skills and expand my horizons.

Today, I stand at the precipice of a new chapter in my career—a seasoned photographer on the cusp of realizing my dream of becoming a sought-after wedding photographer. With each click of the shutter, I am reminded of how far I’ve come and how much further I have yet to go. My journey as a photographer is not just a profession but a lifelong pursuit of perfection and innovation.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Embarking on a career in photography has been a journey filled with numerous obstacles and challenges that have profoundly shaped both my personal and professional life. One of the earliest hurdles was trying to figure out my unique style. In the beginning, I experimented with various genres of photography, from portrait and landscape to fashion and documentary. This phase of exploration was crucial, yet it often left me feeling directionless. Finding a style that resonated with my vision and appealed to potential clients was a daunting task that took years to refine.

During this period, I also attended school and explored other majors and career options. The uncertainty of whether photography was the right path for me led to a significant amount of soul-searching and indecision. I dabbled in fields such as insurance and sales, hoping to find a more conventional and secure career path. However, my passion for photography always drew me back, reinforcing my commitment to this art form despite the uncertainty it entailed.

Imposter syndrome was a constant companion throughout my journey. There were countless moments when I doubted my abilities and felt that I wasn’t good enough to succeed in the competitive world of photography. Comparing my work to that of more established photographers often left me feeling inadequate and discouraged. Overcoming this mental barrier required persistent effort and self-compassion, learning to trust in my growth and the unique perspective I brought to my work.

Years of learning and formal education played a significant role in honing my craft. I dedicated myself to understanding the technical aspects of photography, attending workshops, and seeking mentorship from seasoned professionals. This period of intensive learning, though rewarding, was also stressful. Balancing school, work, and personal life was a constant struggle, and the financial burden of education added to the pressure.

The demands of building a photography career took a toll on both my professional and personal life. Working long hours was often necessary to meet deadlines and develop my portfolio. This commitment meant missing out on personal events and quality time with loved ones. The stress of juggling multiple responsibilities sometimes felt overwhelming, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance was a continuous challenge.

Despite these obstacles, each challenge contributed to my growth as a photographer and business owner. The process of discovering my style taught me the importance of authenticity and self-expression. My experiences in different fields enriched my understanding of the business side of photography, allowing me to market my services effectively. Overcoming imposter syndrome strengthened my resilience and self-belief, essential traits for any entrepreneur.

The extensive education and learning process equipped me with the technical skills and artistic sensibility needed to produce high-quality work. The stress and long hours fostered a strong work ethic and time management skills, enabling me to handle complex projects efficiently. Balancing work and personal life remains an ongoing effort, but it has taught me to prioritize and set boundaries, ensuring that I remain present for both my clients and my loved ones.

In the end, the obstacles and challenges I faced on my journey to becoming a photographer have made me more adept at navigating the complexities of running a business. They have also instilled in me a deep appreciation for the art of photography and the importance of perseverance and balance in achieving long-term success.
