Today we’d like to introduce you to Louisa Owusu.
Hi Louisa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey into fashion began with a deep love for design and craftsmanship long before I had any formal training. I started by laying my own garments onto fabric to cut patterns, teaching myself the fundamentals of construction through hands-on experience. That process helped me realize that fashion was more than a hobby, It was what I truly wanted to pursue.
This realization led me to fashion school in 2005, where I continued developing my skills. Afterward, I began sewing for myself, my sisters, and friends, gradually growing my work into a business. Over time, my work expanded from my bedroom to the living room, then to our porch, and eventually into my own store. Along the way, I trained others who are now doing well back in Ghana.
When I moved to the United States, I continued building my experience by working with several fashion houses before officially launching Luwiza Moda LLC two years ago. Today, I focus on creating high-quality, handcrafted couture, bridal, and prom designs rooted in integrity, craftsmanship, and a commitment to making every client feel confident and seen.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been smooth, especially transitioning my expertise into the U.S. fashion market. One of my biggest challenges has been choosing quality over shortcuts in an industry where fast fashion and cutting corners are common. I am very intentional about craftsmanship and materials because my name and reputation are attached to every piece I create.
I also face the challenge of educating clients on the value of bespoke couture versus mass production. In a world of instant gratification, it can be difficult for people to understand that handcrafted garments require time, skill, and investment. The level of manual labor, high quality materials, and personalized fit involved naturally places custom work on a different timeline and price point than store-bought items.
Additionally, building a brand like Luwiza Moda LLC from the ground up requires perseverance and consistency. While I bring over 16 years of experience, establishing trust within a new community and reinforcing fashion as a respected, high-level craft is a journey I remain committed to every day.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

I am most proud of building a brand that values trust, craftsmanship, and making every client feel seen and valued.
Any big plans?
