Conversations with Ludmilla Muse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ludmilla Muse.

Hi Ludmilla, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born (on March 4th) in Chicago, Illinois to Haitian parents. The last name Muse makes me a “muse” in every sense of the word. I am a mother to my only son, Mecca, who is the inspiration for my children’s book, “My Day at the Park”. I’ve always been creative and love being in front of the camera and performing for people. I got a good taste of performing on stage at my dance recitals, then later on being a cheerleader in grammar school. I developed a love for entertainment at an early age while learning to play piano, and when I began writing and performing plays, singing and dancing for my friends and family. I attended John Robert Powers School for Actors in Chicago. In college, I learned how to be an entrepreneur, by creating my own T-shirt business, in which I was able to show the designs on television in New Orleans, and was able to have consignment deals with local stores. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration which inspired me to manage myself as an independent artist. I got my start as a radio and television host in Houston, TX in 2007.

I’m a multi-hyphenate artist: actor, music artist, writer, former radio host, producer and most recently adding Award-Winning Director of my own semi-animated show “Ludi Tunes” and music video for my single “For My Homies”. My recent pop music release, “For My Homies” was created as a uniquely branded animated video which I wrote, performed, directed, and animated on my own. Both of my independent productions, “Ludi Tunes” and “For My Homies” have been awarded “Best Animated Selection”, “Best Video”, and “Best Pilot/TV Series” from worldwide festivals such as Golden State Film Festival, Los Angeles Film Awards, Hong Kong Indie Film Festival, and Bright International Film Festival, to name a few.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This road has been a bit rocky, to be honest. Growing up in a Caribbean household, art wasn’t looked at as a “real” career, which is why I went to college for business as “something to fall back on”. I’ve endured some tragedies before really being able to pursue my art. I lost my first child when I was twenty-three years old. Losing my child pushed me to be more creative. The funny thing is (not haha) I would draw my son before he was born and I could not understand the drawings until after his funeral. After that, I began making jewelry to keep myself occupied and to not think of the loss as much. A year later after my son’s death, I had another child and ended my marriage when my husband became physically abusive. Having to pull the strength and courage to be a single mother, inspired me to go after my passions 100%!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a multi-hyphenate artist and having the last name ‘Muse’, I really do it all! I sing R&B and pop music. I also produce, write, and animate an award-winning semi-animated series called “Ludi Tunes” streaming on kweliTV, an all-black streaming platform. I currently have two released singles on all music streaming platforms “Blessing” and “For My Homies”, which the music video for the latter has won many international awards. I recently finished recording my very first album entitled “5G”! I worked on the album with Bilal Abdulsamad from the 80’s-90’s group “The Boys”. The album is the soundtrack to an Experimental Anthology Musical film that I wrote along with Bilal. I’m most proud of consistently pursuing my dreams, in all formats and never giving up on myself! The thing that sets me apart from others is that I started listening to motivational speakers, like Les Brown, when I was about eight or nine years old and I live by my motto, which comes from my birthday March 4th and which I also got from Les Brown when I was a child: “No matter what happens in life, march forth!” This motto inspired me to name my production company “March Forth Productions”.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
As much as I laugh and smile, my favorite genres of movies are horror and psychological thrillers. Even though I may cover my eyes while peeking, I’ve always loved a good scare. I like the idea of ghosts/spirits and the supernatural world, which I feel has given me a vivid imagination and a dark sense of humor. I’ve read books like “The Shining” and “Fear Street” when I was really young. I am very spiritual and highly sensitive to the spiritual world. I’m really good at interpreting dreams for myself and others. At some point, I would like to try my hand at stand-up comedy, though I may reserve that for my animated series. I’m also a hopeful romantic. My name, Ludmilla translates to ‘lover of people’, so I love the idea of everyone loving each other!
