Conversations with Mari Miranda

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mari Miranda.

Mari Miranda

Hi Mari, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
At our heart, we’re really a family business.

Our story began at a girls’ brunch, where we were taking turns talking about our family’s visions for the next year or so. The more we talked, the more we saw how these visions aligned and how we had complementary skillsets to build a business – so we did!

Sunnypop was born out of a love for our own families, and a desire to co-create art that reflects the beauty that our clients are making in their everyday lives, with their loved ones.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Do smooth roads exist in business? :p

We’ve definitely learned so many lessons along the way. More than anything, we’ve focused on troubleshooting our offerings to what serves families best. Originally, we started with 20-minute sessions in elaborately decorated sets. That was certainly fun and effective for a season, but the longer we worked with clients the more we saw a need to expand our services to include longer, more creative seasons on-site (usually in clients’ homes).

Currently, we’re trying out a deposit-based system to help moms get their photo sessions on our calendar as early as possible, even before working out the logistics. We’ve certainly seen a fair share of moms miss out on yearly photos because their schedules get too packed, so we’re trying to help alleviate that 🙂

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The thing we’re proudest of is creating space for families to be fully themselves.

I think we strike a great balance between posed, artful images and images that evoke our clients’ genuine feelings and personalities. Before every single session, we remind parents to toss their plans over their shoulders, because we’re photographing kids, after all.

We enjoy stepping into each family’s world and allowing the session to unfold as authentically as possible. At the same time, we have so many tools and games in our back pockets to make sure we get amazing photos, no matter what.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
How far good service can take us. Business is a journey where you absolutely have to learn to pivot and ride whatever wave is in front of you – but the one thing that needs to stay consistent, we think, is great service.

From the beginning, we’ve sought to serve families, and as moms ourselves, we know how much it takes to get a family together for a photo session. We seek to honor that effort with kindness and grace every single time 🙂
